Could technology have saved me from being touched?

Friday, July 04 2008 12:22 AM

I've always loved traveling. The whole idea of experiencing new cultures and seeing new landscapes appeals to me greatly. I even like airports because it's like a melting pot of people with varying nationalities and from so many different backgrounds.

I enjoy the whole experience so much so that I don't mind sitting through long-haul flights, which I find really therapeutic,..... Read more »

Does low cost mean low reliability?

Friday, June 27 2008 12:03 AM

I'm in the City of Lights this week...ah yes, Paris...home to the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Musée du Louvre, and some of the most talented artists. Small wonder it's the world's No. 1 tourist destination.

Did you know that the Eiffel Tower has more than 2.5 million rivets, sports over 40 tonnes of paint and it'll take 1,652 steps to..... Read more »

A business right to give preferential treatment?

Friday, June 20 2008 01:47 AM

The heated debate over Net neutrality made headlines again this week at the imbX show here, where a delegate highlighted that it would be increasingly challenging--with growing demand for video and broadband--to ensure all Internet users are able to access the Web without discrimination.

The fundamental ideology behind Net..... Read more »

Getting healthcare, without getting out of bed

Friday, June 13 2008 02:58 AM

No one out there likes feeling under the weather. But on the occasions that they do feel ill, wouldn't it be nice if they could seek medical advice without stepping out of their house?

In telemedicine, clinical services or medical information is provided via the telephone, Internet or other communication networks. It's widely deemed most beneficial for delivering healthcare to..... Read more »

When IT pays to grow old

Friday, June 06 2008 02:05 AM

The results are out! What results, you ask? Well, it's the answer that every working adult in Asia wants to know: Are they earning less than their peers?

That's the perennial question, isn't it? Just how much are IT professionals paid? More importantly, what is your market worth when you're stacked against your counterparts in the industry and other Asian countries?..... Read more »

Is the law still not catching up?

Friday, May 30 2008 03:13 AM

When news first broke this week that a Singapore company had been awarded the patent to a technology that enables Web sites and pages to be linked via images, I found it tough to believe the report bore any truth.

Long story short, Singapore-based Vuestar Technologies has hit the town with a stern message that any company that uses photos..... Read more »

Why you've gotta love the Germans

Friday, May 23 2008 01:11 AM

Ich bin ein Berliner!

Okay, so I'm not exactly a Berliner--for that matter, neither am I a jelly donut--but I am in the German capital this week covering a conference--more than seven years since I last visited the country.

Germany has always been one of my favorite European nations, partly because I've got friends here and partly because I'm kinda fond..... Read more »

Up close and personal with a merger

Friday, May 16 2008 11:17 AM

What can you get for 13.9 billion buckaroos? For Hewlett-Packard, US$13.9 billion would allow you to buy your way into becoming the second biggest IT services company in the industry.

HP this week confirmed plans to acquire EDS and deepen its reach into the services market.

Having generated..... Read more »

Today's corporate landscape ain't Sesame Street

Friday, May 09 2008 01:44 AM

The reality of today's business environment is that many companies have resorted to cost-cutting measures, in a bid to brace themselves for any spillover effects from the economic downturn in the United States.

Headcounts have been frozen, resources are stretched thin and in the worst-case scenario, jobs are cut and staff layoffs can run in the hundreds, or even thousands.

As..... Read more »

If only I had the Internet back then

Friday, May 02 2008 12:18 AM

For as long as I can remember, I've had aspirations of becoming a performing musician. As the years passed and reality set in--and probably to my parents' relief--I decided journalism was a safer career to go with.

But, if the Internet was as pervasive back then as it is now, would I have made a different decision?

Take latest singing..... Read more »
