Dec. 21, 2012. It's a big day on the calendar, particularly because some believe it marks the last day of the world as we know it. The apocalypse. Armageddon.
The end of the world prediction spawns mainly from the Mayan Long Count calendar, which terminates on that fateful December 2012 day. I would suggest the Mayans quite simply possibly ran..... Read more »

Like some others out there, I was terrified of the dark and avoided watching horror flicks growing up.
But, as I matured and my adult mind learnt reason and rationale, I realized my fear of the dark was baseless and that those screaming bloodied actors were actually covered in prop blood and latex...though I'm still horrified each time I look..... Read more »

My parents never really sat me down for that dreaded discussion about death, but I knew at an early age that life was infinitely finite, regardless of what or who you were. Death comes to all, and that includes your beloved pet terrapins, hamsters, dogs and of course, humans.
My earliest memory of "knowing" a human death was at age..... Read more »

Al Jarreau, considered one of this generation's greatest jazz vocalists, was in town this week for a one-night concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall, where the 69-year-old rallied the crowd with hits like We're In This Love Together, Mornin' and my personal favorite, Take Five.
Jazz is a genre I've enjoyed for some years now--apart from Barry Manilow's music, of..... Read more »

This past week has been calamity filled. Following the freak dust storm in Sydney, Typhoon Kestana flooded into the Philippines and later raged its way toward Taiwan and Vietnam.
Then came the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that hit Sumatra on Wednesday, where the tremors were so strong that neighboring Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore were also shaken by the ripples.
I was..... Read more »

This week marks the first time Barack Obama stood in front of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. In his inaugural address before an international band of government bigwigs, the U.S. president championed a "new era of engagement" and global cooperation based on mutual interests and respect.

I had hosted a roundtable dialog in April 2001 that included Neil Montefiore, then-CEO of MobileOne (M1). In the midst of the discussion, Neil's phone buzzed and he immediately picked it up to check the text message that had just come in.
He then spent the next few minutes punching in his reply, while the other executives at the roundtable..... Read more »

Growing up, I used to relish every visit to the stationery shop.
I'd spend hours browsing through row after row of colored pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners and writing pads. I collected the prettiest scented letter writing pads, and would make my dad promise to buy letter pads from countries he traveled to for work.
I would then painstakingly choose the..... Read more »

I was at a local IT retail store last weekend, looking to buy a set of new ink cartridges for a multifunction printer (MFP) at home. The printer was given free with a purchase I made about two to three years ago, during a promotion at a mall.
It's a pretty old printer by today's standards so I was quite..... Read more »

Life is about choices. We all make decisions almost every second of our life. Some are menial...should I floss and brush my teeth today...while others more significant...should I say "I do"?
Regardless, every decision we make will have consequences, be it small or big, bad or good. Not flossing may lead to decay, but this can be easily fixed by my..... Read more »
