iPod touch suitable for road warriors?

Always game to try new gadgets. Bring 'em on!

The iPod touch is a fantastic device for browsing the Internet via Wi-Fi. It's slimmer, lighter and has a wider screen (3.5 inch) compared to the typical PDAs (personal digital assistants).

But is it suitable for the mobile warrior? I tried it out and discovered:

• The iPod touch works with Gmail and Microsoft Outlook Web Access, so you can access your e-mail conveniently at Wi-Fi hotspots.

• The screen is bright and gorgeous. You can browse most Web sites without having to squint at the tiny text.

• The touchscreen keyboard takes some getting used to. I don't recommend it for typing long e-mail messages--typing on my WEP key was tedious enough.

• The iPod touch doesn't work with Java and Flash, but JavaScript and AJAX are OK.

• If you're bored with work, the iPod touch gives you the ultimate distraction from work. It supports YouTube videos, just click the icon on the homepage. The selection of videos on the iPod touch version of YouTube is limited, but the videos are streamed at a higher resolution compared with the YouTube Web site.

It's interesting to see more Wi-Fi Web browsers embedded inside lifestyle devices--already you can use the Sony PSP and the Nintendo DS to browse the Net. Maybe someday, we mobile warriors won't need to carry laptops or PDAs, since we can work on-the-go with casual devices like MP3 players and games handhelds.
