My favourite Vista keyboard shortcuts

Posted in Mister Tech by Lee Lup Yuen on Saturday, February 28 2009 11:33 PM

People who see me working on my notebook are often amazed with the speed at which I perform tasks by using the keyboard instead of the mouse. Here are the keyboard shortcuts that I use frequently:

Shortcuts for Microsoft Office and Notepad:
Ctrl-O: Open a document
Ctrl-S: Save the current document
Alt-S: In Outlook, sends the current email
Ctrl-A: Select all contents of the document
Ctrl-C: Copy the selected content into the clipboard
Ctrl-V: Paste the clipboard content
Alt-H, V, S: Paste Special in Microsoft Office, useful for pasting text without formatting and for pasting values/formulas/formats in Excel
Alt-W, L: In Word, changes the document view to Web Layout view for easier reading on small screens

Shortcuts for Internet Explorer:
Ctrl-O: Open a URL
F6: Selects the URL bar
Backspace: Go back to previous web page
F11: Expands the web browser to fullscreen mode for easier browsing on small screens. Press F11 again to return to normal mode.

Shortcuts for Windows Vista:
Windows-R: Brings up the "Run" prompt. Type the name of an application (e.g. notepad) or the name of a file (e.g. c:\report.doc). You can press up/down-arrow to view the list of past applications/files. Press Enter to select.
Alt-Space, N: Minimise the current window
Alt-Space, X: Maximise the current window
Alt-F4: Close the current window. If you're prompted to save the file, press left/right-arrow to select the choice and press Enter.

The Menu key on the keyboard is useful in Windows Explorer:

In Windows Explorer, you can press the Menu key followed by M to rename a name quickly.
