Perak, first M'sian state to go wireless

Posted in Malaysia Explorer by Oon Yeoh on Wednesday, July 05 2006 06:55 AM

The northern Malaysian state of Perak will soon become the state with the widest wireless broadband Internet service coverage when 80 percent of the state is Wi-Fi enabled by the end of 2007.

To make the plan a success, all Members of Parliament from Perak had been asked to allocate RM100,000 (US$27,419) to finance the programme.

The state government had also requested the cooperation of owners of large buildings in major towns to provide the service.

The programme is part of the state information and communications technology masterplan to make Perak a knowledge-based state by 2010.

Now, if only the rest of the country would follow Perak's lead. And why isn't KL more Wi-Fi enabled?

i agree completely. but left to individual state, the pace of development would be uneven, even if a sense of competition kicks in. why can't the central government do more to set an national agenda for IT?

An engineer by training, Edwin first cut his teeth as a cellular radio frequency optimization engineer in one of Malaysia's largest telcos. After more than five years, he hung up his radio engineering boots to try his hand at technology reporting at The Star, Malaysia's leading English daily, where he won several awards for Best Online Technology reporting. He left to start his own editorial consultancy and is now a freelance journalist for several publications, including ZDNet Asia. A self-confessed gadget geek, Edwin hopes his blog contributions will stir up deeper discussions within the Malaysian technology scene.
