Number portability to boost competition

Posted in Malaysia Explorer by Oon Yeoh on 2007/02/28 17:23:03

It's been a long time coming but Mobile Number Portability (MNP) finally looks like it's going to happen in Malaysia.

The government has named three companies--Talian Gerak Alih Sdn Bhd, Unified Communications Sdn Bhd and Telcordia Technologies Inc--to form a consortium to operate and manage the country's Mobile Number Portability Clearinghouse.

MNP allows mobile phone customers to hold onto their current numbers even after they switch to a new operator.

This will serve to spur competition among the mobile telcos as they will have to fight harder than ever before to retain their customers.

The pilot implementation of MNP is expected to happen by the end of the year--not that soon, but not too far away either.

Perhaps then we will finally see aggressive and innovative pricing, which until now, is still lacking among the three mobile telcos operating in this country.
