Well, it's about time. Perak and Melaka have both pushed ahead with plans to cover the entire state with Wi-Fi. Now, finally, Kuala Lumpur (KL) is on board as well.
KL Wireless Metropolitan is a project initiated by Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (KL City Hall) and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
The vendor chosen to implement this project is Green Packet, one of four WiMAX licence recipients. The technology to be used, though, is Wi-Fi.
I wonder why though. The project is expected to be completed only in 2010. Mobile WiMAX presumably would be ready by then.
Still, Wi-Fi is not a bad choice. It's a wireless technology most laptops are equipped to receive.
But with RM50 million (US$14.9 million) allocated to the project, why would it take so long to be completely deployed?
Wi-Fi is not a new technology. Nor is it rocket science. With enough financial resources in place, it should be possible to complete the rollout much faster.
Good idea but as with the current internet service provider, we don't hear their strategy addressing backhaul bandwidth problem. Yeah, they can cover the whole city with it for the benefit of few who will use youtube and bittorrent continuosly.
It will join the likes of Time and Jaring offering that don't invest properly at the core and gateway network.

Citywide Wi-Fi for KL
It's all irrelevant until someone realises that Malaysia's entire internet connectivity is totally compromised by the inadequate speed / capacity for transpacific cabling resulting in incoming traffic speeds that are simply unacceptable.

I wonder why are we going for WiFi when we are about to enter the WiMax era...its like deploying a wide 3G network when we are now heading towards 3.75G....
Why look behind?
I have wrote about it here

Find out who you should be spending your IT budget with
Really Great to hear that KL will be covered by WiFi! The faster it deployed, the faster people get benefit! I believe there are few major they need to resolve:
1. Backbone connection - This is one of the tough task to decide and deploy as pulling land line is not a simple task and it needs to cover whole KL area.
2. Interference - This is direct affect to the quality of WiFi.
3. WiFi Point Design - This will be affected the coverage area.
4. Renting - To deploy, need to rent a place, power, backbone connection.
May be there are lots of issues behind which normal people can't really see it beside above. But still really hope it can deliver a good service in future!
