Thursday, September 13 2007 11:06 AM

Last Friday, I attended the Linux World China 2007 conference and exhibition held in the luxury Beijing International Hotel. Instead of giving you a chronological report of the event, I'd just like to share some interesting observations.

First of all, on the sponsors' list was a big surprise: Microsoft. I asked..... Read more »

Sleepless nights for Microsoft as IBM joins OpenOffice.org?

Monday, September 10 2007 05:32 PM

Here is some good news. It was announced today that IBM will join the OpenOffice.org community. This is OpenOffice.org's opportunity to compete with Microsoft's big cash cow, and I guess there will be people having sleepless nights in Redmond. If you're wondering what the mood is like here in China,..... Read more »

An open document standard for China

Wednesday, August 01 2007 12:44 PM

Currently Microsoft is driving a big campaign to get its latest document format Office Open XML (OOXML) approved as an ISO standard.

However, there is already an existing ISO document standard called OpenDocument Format (ODF). This standard was first approved by OASIS in May 2005. It derived from the..... Read more »

Is Microsoft intentionally killing the Chinese desktop software industry?

Monday, July 23 2007 03:33 PM

It is an inconvenient truth that China's local desktop software industry, for a long time now, has been badly aggrieved by the piracy of Microsoft products. Although most of the Chinese software companies base their products on open source, they cannot really compete against the illegal copies of Windows and..... Read more »

Second take: OSS World Summit 2007 in Guangzhou

Sunday, July 01 2007 09:27 PM

The second day of the 2007 Open Source China Open Source World started off really badly for me. Somehow, I overlooked that the program was rescheduled from 9.00 to 8.30 in the morning. This alone would have been no problem, because I'm usually very early, but to my surprise, several..... Read more »

Last week (June 21 & 22), I attended the 2007 Open Source China Open Source World summit in Guangzhou, hosted by China Open Source Promotion Union (COPU).

The organizers managed to get quite a few interesting speakers down to Guangzhou, including some international OSS VIPs like Linux Foundation Executive Director..... Read more »

First, an introduction...

Friday, June 15 2007 11:19 AM

First of all, I want to thank my predecessor Michael Iannini for passing the baton and offering the opportunity for me to take this blog space. Like Michael, I am a member of the Beijing Linux User Group (BLUG), which is probably the most interesting Linux User Groups in the..... Read more »

How Sun promotes OSS in China

Saturday, April 21 2007 02:29 PM

Sun Microsystems hosted the 2007 China Education and Research Conference this past week. It was interesting to know that Sun has been collaborating with China's Ministry of Education for 10 years now. In fact, many Chinese computer science professors and even ministry officials will reminisce that their first computer experience..... Read more »

Can GPL be enforced in China?

Thursday, April 12 2007 02:50 PM

The question of the enforceability of the GPL came into question during a presentation by Taiwen Jiang, the XOOPS maintainer. XOOPS is basically a home grown China, well actually Asian, open source system. Recently, XOOPS has picked up a champion to help them grow their..... Read more »

Thursday, April 05 2007 10:51 PM

At last week's 2007 Software Innovation Summit, Christophe Bisciglia from Google introduced to the attendees Google 101. Google has just recently developed this curriculum which Google staff, namely Christophe, if my understanding is correct, has been working with University of Washington to deliver these courses. Now Google would like to..... Read more »
