As you develop your mobile enterprise application, select your mobile device very carefully -- it may ruin your chances of rolling out a really successful mobile application.
Mobile phones: Cheap and easy to use, long battery life, but cumbersome for data entry, difficult to read.
PDAs without keypads: Heavier, more costly to buy and replace, shorter battery life, somewhat cumbersome for data entry, somewhat easier to read.
PDAs with keypads, Blackberry: Same as above, but better for data entry.
Tablet PC: Even shorter battery life, but more convenient for data entry (if your arms don't get tired). Compatible with virtually all PC software.
Notebook PC: Very short battery life but best system performance. Don't carry it around too long or it might get unpleasantly warm. Data entry is impossible unless you find a desk.
I totally agree with you. That's why you need to make the right choice for the mobile device when developing a mobile application. Do you think there will ever be a do-it-all device that's perfect for everything?

Size does matter, especially when it comes to mobile devices. Will there every be a do-it-all device? It really depends on the individual user. BlackBerry does two things pretty well: It works as a phone and an e-mail device. Does it qualify as a do-it-all device, since making calls and checking e-mail are the top 2 applications for business workers?

the dopod 900 does it all.

Maybe it's just me -- I find the Blackberry and other smartphones like the Dopod too underpowered for my needs. That's why I still lug around my hefty Sony Vaio all over the office, around town, on holiday, etc. I'll write about this in my new post "Why I Killed My Blackberry". :-)

I'm starting to wonder, too, about smartphones. Laptop is still the best mobile device for business workers. For pure communication purposes, a plain mobile phone for making calls and SMS works for me.

I don't think there's a one do-it-all device at the moment for most mobile workers. You're still very much tethered into using a combination of devices if you want optimum performance.
