SINGAPORE--A special mobile TV interest group has been formed to drive the adoption of the DVB-H standard in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Bridge Networks, Indonesian content aggregator MECA, Malaysia's pay-TV network MiTV, Nokia, and Intel announced Wednesday the formation of the DVB-H Asia-Pacific Alliance (DAPA).
DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcast-Handheld) is one of several technologies that are competing to become a global standard for delivering broadcast TV to handsets. Other rival standards include Qualcomm's MediaFlo and DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting).
The group said in a statement that it welcomes other companies, and is open to cooperating with other similar alliances and forums to boost the adoption of DVB-H in the region.
Industry analysts at Informa Telecom & Media have predicted that the Asia-Pacific market will lead in the adoption of mobile TV. The region is forecast to have 68.4 million mobile broadcast TV users by 2010, or nearly 55 percent of the world's total.
DAPA held its inaugural meeting in Singapore today, in conjunction with BroadcastAsia 2006.
