Lucent Technologies and VeriSign, for instance, successfully inked million-dollar agreements with Asian telecom operators. Not surprisingly, representatives from both companies had glowing comments about the show.

An executive from VeriSign, which announced a "multi-year, multi-million" dollar deal with Korea's SK Telecom this week, found the show fruitful in more ways than one. Marshall Towe, vice president of the company's communication services division in the Asia-Pacific region, commented that CommunicAsia is "the best show in the world, next to the 3GSM World Congress".

"Now you've got a broadband forum, and you've [discussions on] IPTV… everything is merging into one. [The show] is very broad-ranged and encompasses everything in the industry," Towe added.

Ringing the till as well was Lucent, which signed US$25 million worth of deals, including one worth US$15 million with Telekom Malaysia to upgrade its high-speed network.

Keith White, security services director at Lucent Technologies Asia Pacific, said: "CommunicAsia, without a doubt, is a premier ICT (infocommunications technology) event in the Asia-Pacific or at least South Asia. We met potential customers, and they had a lot of interest in our new [product] releases."

Technology takeaways
Meanwhile, key industry players from around the globe held court in conference sessions, debating hot topics such as future broadband services and technologies, IPTV and WiMax.

And as a sign that the Internet and communications industries are converging more closely than ever, executives companies such as Yahoo and Microsoft got together to talk about the about future of collaboration, while consumer Internet applications got their fair share of airplay at various forums, as enterprises acknowledged their use in the business environment.

Hong Kong-based IDC analyst Claus Mortensen, who was at the show, felt the organizers did a good job. He said the trade show struck a good balance between the interests of the exhibitors and the visitors. "A good sign for the telecoms industry overall," he added.

Mortensen also gave the thumbs up to the strong IPTV and WiMax focus of this year's exhibition, as the region will see more related technology trails in the coming years.

"In 2006 to 2007, we're going to see a lot of things happen in the IPTV arena. You'll see trials going on in Asia and a lot of broadband providers going into this space," he noted.

Mortensen expects the same focus to be given to IPTV and WiMax at the upcoming ITU Telcom World 2005 show in Hong Kong.
