Managed risk and information security services provider e-Cop last week appointed Chatree Rietavron as its Thailand country manager as the company ramps up its presence here following the opening of its security operations center (SOC) in the Empire Tower building in September.

Chatree manages a staff of 12 at e-Cop Thailand and he expects the team here to double in size next year, while the demand for managed security services here has increased rapidly following the Cyber Crime Law enacted here in August.

The law requires service providers and companies to maintain logs of Internet access and Chatree said that among e-Cop's offerings was an on-site device that could maintain logs in compliance with the new law and create monthly reports for between 10,000 baht and 25,000 baht (US$297 and US$743) a month.

e-Cop is focusing on raising security awareness here and offers a suite of managed security services, enabling companies to outsource their security management while still keeping all data exposure within the country, a set of technology consulting services that enables companies to establish their own internal SOC, and professional security services offering penetration testing and vulnerability assessments, network forensics and to provide a security health scorecard.

Chatree said that e-Cop would also be working with partners and government agencies such as Nectec, Sipa and ThaiCert to help educate the market about IT security, while a big event was being planned for February.

The company was set up in Singapore in 2000 and now runs eight SOCs across the region, in India, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia and Singapore, where it has one for enterprises and another for the government sector. In other markets, e-Cop has a total of 12 joint-ventures managing SOCs.

Chatree said that e-Cop was uniquely placed with capabilities across the entire spectrum of security services while being the only company specializing in IT security that was focussed on Asian customers. The company did its research and development in Singapore and owned its own intellectual property in its Cyclops range of security solutions and tools, including enterprise security management, intrusion prevention, intrusion detection and content integrity tools.

"Our expertise in managed security services and strong track record in developing and running security operations centers has helped many enterprises and government agencies to cost-effectively outsource and manage their information security needs," Chatree said.

The new country manager has held previous positions at NEC Corp, Lucent Technology and Motorola and will drive business and strengthen relationships with local partners and customers, a company press statement said.

The reaction to a report issued Tuesday by Flurry Analytics managed to completely overlook some interesting news--the Android-based Motorola Droid outsold the original iPhone over the same period of time following their respective launches--to focus instead on the sales numbers for the Nexus One.
