Facebook has scaled from a small, private testing of its Messenger for Windows application and opened the tool up to the wider public, according to various reports on Thursday.
Tech news site TechCrunch reported that the app was first released for testing in November this year, but is now available via public download link in the social networking site's Help Center. The app will only run on Windows 7 operating system, though, added another tech site, The Verge.
Facebook stated that the client allows users to chat and message with Facebook friends, see the latest updates from their community and get quick notifications about what is going on--all without being on the Facebook site.
The Verge pointed out that the Windows client is the latest in a series of standalone Facebook chat applications made available to users earlier this year. These include mobile apps for iOS, Android and BlackBerry platforms to enable users to chat on the go, it added.
