Revenue for global location-based services (LBS) platform and infrastructure will grow from US$560 million in 2010 to US$1.8 billion in 2015, at which time it will reach saturation, according to ABI Research.

In a Monday report, ABI Research practice director Dominique Bonte said the recent "off-deck revolution" has boosted the popularity of consumer LBS applications on smartphone application stores.

However, he added that there is still huge opportunity for carriers to invest in network-based positioning platforms for mission-critical person tracking, as well as enterprise LBS services such as asset tracking and workforce management.

In fact, governments are taking the lead and turning to network-based positioning for lawful intercept, emergency calling and national security purposes. The infrastructure's superior indoor coverage and overall reliability give it an edge over GPS which is reliant on a handset.

Bonte also noted that while high precision A-GPS (Assisted-GPS) location technologies are expected to dominate the social consumer LBS space, medium-accuracy methods such as enhanced Cell-ID and high accuracy positioning like U-TDOA should offer carriers the unique assets needed to take on off-deck LBS providers.

Previously, Mobile Location Center (MLC) licensing was driven largely by the E911 emergency calling market in the United States.

In the future, MLC revenues will be propelled by the launch of carrier-grade LBS services and governmental safety and security requirements in regions such as Europe, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia Pacific.

The MLC vendor ecosystem consists of traditional wireless infrastructure providers such as Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks, as well as specialized players like Telecommunication Systems (TCS), TruePosition and Creativity Software.
