Eradicate Windows XP shutdown problems

While Windows XP doesn’t have anywhere near the number of shutdown problems that plagued earlier versions of Windows, a few things can still trip up the new operating system during the shutdown procedure. I'll show you how to solve five of the most common XP shutdown problems you’re likely to encounter. I'll explain how to fix problems caused by the Input Method Editor, open applications, Roxio software, the Nvidia video card, and the power management scheme. I’ll also pass along tips for troubleshooting these types of problems.

Input Method Editor hangs on shutdown
If your users need Windows XP for international communication and have an Input Method Editor (IME) installed on their computers, they may discover that Windows XP occasionally hangs when they shut down—especially if the IME is enabled for use in the Welcome screen. In these situations, Windows XP will appear to begin the shutdown procedure normally, but will then hang while displaying the Saving Your Settings message. Once the system hangs, pressing [Ctrl][Alt][Delete] has no effect. Though users can move the mouse pointer, they can’t revive the system.

You can solve this shutdown problem by downloading and installing the Restarting Windows XP update. To download this update, which was released on Feb. 1, 2002, visit the Microsoft Windows Update Web site.

Be aware that Microsoft warns that the current Restarting Windows XP update may undergo more testing in the near future to ensure quality and should only be downloaded by those severely affected by this problem. If the user has an IME but is not experiencing this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the arrival of the Service Pack 1 for Windows XP, which will contain the final Restarting Windows XP update.

Shutdown interrupted by slow process
When users shut down, Windows XP gives each process running in the background 20 seconds to close itself before the operating system shuts down the computer. If a process cannot close itself down within that 20-second time-out period, users will see the Wait, End Task, Or Cancel dialog box that alerts them to the problem process and prompts them to choose between waiting another 20 seconds, ending the process, or canceling the shutdown procedure.

If they see this dialog box on a regular basis, they may be running an application, possibly a proprietary in-house program, that needs more time to properly prepare for a shutdown. You can increase Windows XP’s time-out period by making a small change in the registry.

Note
Since editing the registry can be dangerous, I recommend performing a full backup before you attempt this operation.

To begin, select Start | Run and launch the Registry Editor by typing Regedit.exe in the Open text box. Once you have the Registry Editor up and running, locate and double-click on the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER. When the subtree is visible, open each of the following subtrees in succession:
  1. Control Panel
  2. Desktop

Once you open the Desktop key, scroll through the values in that key until you locate the WaitToKillAppTimeout value. Double-click on it to open the Edit String dialog box. The default value in this dialog box is 20000, which is 20 seconds expressed in milliseconds. Once you change the value, click OK, close the Registry Editor, and then restart the system.

I suggest starting with a five-second change and then testing the shutdown procedure to see if this gives the process enough time to properly shut down. If not, try increasing it by two-second intervals until you find a time-out value that works.

I have had the problem of XP not shutting down my computer resulting in a 'blue screen of death' ever since I upgraded the mother board and CPU a couple of months back. Finally I can say the problem has been fixed by upgrading Easy CD Creator 5.1 to 5.3. I'm so pleased to have finally found the fix.
Thank you for such a well written and informative artical.

Hi,I'm searching for help. I have a HP laptop and lately I've been having problems shutting down . When ever I go to the "start" button to shut down, it does nothing at all. I've given it 5, 10 and even 15 minutes to shut down and nothing. I always have to do a "Sytem restore" to have the ability to shut down. Can anyone help me ?

Thank you,

Robert

Any help is appreciated . Just send it to me at : roberto.vera@phila.gov

Nick,

I had a problem like yours and I think I solved it by creating another user account on the computer. It has been working for about a hour and twenty or so shutdowns. I have my fingers crossed.

On shutdown I get a pop up window thats says pdp rpc server window. The only option I have is to end it. Or I can wait till the timer bar ends and then I can select cancel or end. Is there any way to get this window to stop??

IBM Client Access Software might be the problem.

Go to the CONTROL PANEL -->ADD/ REMOVE PROGRAMS--> uninstall the IBM Client Access S/W

Disabling "Automatically Restart"

Right click MY COMPUTER icon-->Select System Properties-->Goto Advanced --> Under Startup and Recovery Click SETTINGS--> Uncheck Automatically Restart--

Should resolve the problem

Posted by alan curran on Monday, December 01 2003 11:22 AM

ok, this works ;) Re-install XP and everything will run perfect again. Try using Norton Ghost2003 to restore XP the way you had it installed at the beginning. This really saves hours of wasting time to re-install.

Heres the Answer to the Madness.
I installed the nForce 3.13 software, and it installs properly, but makes my computer lock on shutdown.

I'm pissed that I had to Reinstall windows and install one thing at a time to figure that out.

I have the same problem - my PC Reboots when I shutdown. I'm not sure if this is an XP or a Bios setting, but it did not happen under Win 98.

I found help on the problem of seemingly spontaneous restarts when attempting to shut down windows at this site:

www.theeldergeek.com...

The following in particular was valuable:

Startup and Recovery Options: By default, XP is configured that when a system failure is encountered the system automatically restarts. This behavior may at times be desirable, especially if a system is unattended and and a reboot is necessary to restore a system to operation. Unfortunately, it also makes it very difficult if not impossible for a user to read the messages that are presented that may provide clues to a shutdown problem. To prevent the system from automatically restarting:
Right click [My Computer] click [Properties] and select [Advanced] tab.
Click the [Settings] button in the [Startup and Recovery] section.
Remove the checkmark from [Automatically Restart] in [System Failure] section.

Pay particular attention to these messages as they may provide valuable clues to shutdown issues.

In my case, once I turned of the automatic restart, I was able to see and read a BSOD that identified a driver on which windows was choking while shutting down. It was disturbing because the driver in qusetion was for the agp slot on my nVidia chipset MB. Reverting to a previous driver fixed the problem. I am currently downloading the latest chipset drivers. I hope that they address this problem.

Posted by Goldwyn Tagud on Thursday, July 01 2004 03:11 PM

well bud.
you're probably infected with blaster worm or sasser or welsh worm.
i suggest u do a clean format. unplug ur networking if ur on LAN.
get a adaware ffrom www.lavasoft.de
and to remove this trojan , u'll need to go to microsoft.com and download the service pack 1 and 2 and run it on ur pc everytime or just keep it running in the background by creating a batch file

this should work.

My shutdown problem is as follows: Windows XP shuts down to the end normally, even my monitor switches to standby mode, but the computer's "on/off" light remains lit and the power supply remains on. No hanging, no error warnings. No automatic rebooting, unless initiated. Tried a number of suggested solutions but in vain. Can anybody who experienced similar case and overcame it give some assistance and advice?

My WinXP computer doesn't shut down at all. I click Start>Turn Off>Shutdown .. and nothing happens. Nothing closes down. No messages that it can't close down. nothing. I try to restart, and the same thing happens (or doesn't as it happens).

I'm kinda stuck here, and I really don't want to go through the trouble of re-installing everything again. I DO have duel boot setup, w/ Linux as the primary boot.

I also have StyleXP setup and windows therefore has a boot menu after I choose Windows instead of Linux. The Windows boot menu has two options, one of which is StyleXP mode, one is w/out StyleXP.

I've been coding all day (and night), and windows is not my expertise, so any help would be appreciated.

I've seen the same problem and more - Start Logout does absolutely nothing. Also have trouble printing - it does absolutely nothing. Rebooting via the power off switch clears up the problem.

Brandon, You probably have a Compaq and/or Lexmark printer installed. PDP is a printer driver "integrator" from ViewAhead Technologies (formerly "DeviceGuys, Inc.) I think your problems are caused by the monitoring processes of your printer(s), which must be terminated prior to shutdown. Look for a running process: CMPDSRV.EXE. Perhaps reinstalling the printer(s) will help.

I had the same problem. It was due to the computer warm up. I fixed it by buying an " air duster" ($7.5) It was due to dust build up in the fan. That can of compressed air just blew up all the dust from the fans and the computer is now working like new.
Hope it help you.

Hi
I got a little problem here when I try to shut down my Windows XP. It's quite strange, when I shutdown or close a session of windows, the usual blue screen appears, but without any message and the computer won't ever stop. Normally it's written «Saving personnal settings...» but there is just nothing written this time, only the logo of Windows.

Do you have any idea how to solve this?

Thanx to answerme

This issue is not due to a problem with the McAfee software, but with the Drive Letter Access (DLA) component commonly found in burning software. The best and easiest way to resolve this issue is to update your installed software that utilizes DLA. For example, if you have IBM Drive Letter Access, Veritas Drive Letter Access, Hewlett Packard Drive Letter Access, or Stomp RecordNow DLA component, you would want to contact those vendors for information on how to accomplish this.

Suggested Solution #1 (update your software that uses DLA)

Hey I am having trouble with my windows XP. I have looked everywhere for a solution but to no avail.
When I go to shutdown its goes through the normal process. However it does not properly powerdown and therefore after the screen says 'Windows is Shutting Down' its gos to a blank blue screen where it stays like this till I hold the 'on' button down for 10 seconds. Does anyone have an answer for this as it is starting to do my head in. I have looked at all suggestions and have tried all.
