whitepaper Recognizing Matching Patterns for XML Data Using Grammar-Based Data Compression Algorithm2008-12-16 Hitachi
XML is a standard format for data exchange and it is well suited to represent internet applications because of its text-based format. However, this flexibility means that it incurs higher data processing overhead than ordinary data formats. This paper proposes a high-performance XML processing method using a novel pattern recognition algorithm based on a grammar compression algorithm. In the method, training XML documents are pre-analyzed in order to detect frequently appearing constructs in the document. The extended XML parser uses the results of the pre-analysis to make its parsing faster with speculative input matching.

whitepaper Morph: A (Shape) Polymorphic XML Query Language2008-12-16 Utah State University
By imposing a single hierarchy on data, XML makes queries brittle in the sense that a query might fail to produce the desired result if it is executed on the same data organized in a different hierarchy, or if the hierarchy evolves during the lifetime of an application. This paper presents a new XML query language, called Morph, which supports more flexible querying. Morph is a shape polymorphic query language, that is, a single query can extract relevant data from a variety of differently hierarchies. The Morph data model distills an XML data collection into a graph of closest relationships. This paper describes the syntax, semantics, and a prototype implementation of Morph.

whitepaper Assertion Support for Manipulating Constrained Data-Centric XML2008-12-16 University of Kaiserslautern
XML is used for different purposes. They are interested in data-centric applications of XML where it is used to handle structured data in loosely coupled, distributed systems. In many such scenarios, it is important that the XML data complies to structural and integrity constraints, in particular to value-based constraints. This paper presents a technique to maintain the invariants. For a core procedural manipulation language, they show how to automatically derive the weakest precondition of procedures for the constraints. They present a formalization of a data-centric XML abstraction and an assertion language that enables weakest precondition generation. The framework allows to automatically simplify and reduce the generated preconditions such that checking becomes independent of the size of the constraint definitions.

whitepaper Resource-Aware Deployment and Configuration of QoS-Enabled Middleware2008-12-15 Vanderbilt University
Ad hoc Deployment and Configuration (D&C) of fault-tolerance mechanisms can lead to unacceptable response times, overloads, and low-availability for soft real-time applications. This paper describes how the Quality-of-Service (QoS)-enabled middleware called DeCoRAM (Deployment and Configuration Reasoning via Analysis and Modeling) provides a holistic and automated solution to fault-tolerance and real-time D&C through two novel capabilities. First, DeCoRAM provides a deployment-time allocation and scheduling algorithm that maps passively replicated application components to appropriate hosts subject to their soft real-time requirements and determines the failover order of application replicas based on their worst case state synchronization delays. Second, DeCoRAM's model-driven D&C engine deploys and configures replicas for each application and provides resource-aware failover and delay-bounded state synchronization between backup and primary replicas.
