Extracting Meaning From Text With OpenCalais R3: Formally-Structured Text That Is Published Can Be Summarized and Combined With Other Text to Provide New Insights | 2008-10-17 | JupiterMedia |
| A big challenge companies face today is that most information, both online and archived, is only available as published text and does not contain any formal structure suitable for synthesizing. In a formal structure, information can be summarized, used to help locate meaningful text, and combined with other text to provide new insights. This paper shows how to convert unstructured written text into structured data using OpenCalais, which is a public general-purpose text-extraction service that uses a combination of statistical and grammatical analysis to extract meaning. OpenCalais is not the only solution available for extracting meaning from text, but it is the only publicly available web service.

All About Microsoft: CodeTracker | 2008-12-15 | ZDNet |
| Revised - December, 2008
Can't keep Midori straight from MinSafe? Unsure how Red Dog, Cosmos and Zurich fit in Microsoft's cloud OS picture? Tracking Microsoft's myriad codenames is an (almost) full-time occupation. And Mary Jo Foley knows that better than anyone, as she spends many of her waking hours tracking down the latest names in the hopes of being able to better keep tabs on what's coming next from the Redmondians. Each month, we'll feature an updated, downloadable version of the CodeTracker. And best of all, this handy, informative chart is FREE. Towards Scalable End-to-End QoS Provision for VoIP Applications | 2008-10-16 | Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers |
| The growth of the Internet and the development of its new applications have increased the demand for providing a certain level of resource assurance and service support. Recently, the IETF have proposed a new QoS architecture that implements IntServ over DiffServ in order to provide an end-to-end QoS for scalable networks. Hence, it became possible to provide and support a certain level of QoS for some delay sensitive and bandwidth-demanding applications such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). With regard to VoIP applications, delay, jitter and packet loss are crucial issues that have to be taken into consideration for any VoIP system design and such parameters need a distinct level of QoS support.

Battery Technology for Data Centers and Network Rooms: Safety Codes | 2008-10-16 | American Power Conversion (APC) |
| This white paper reviews fire safety regulations and their application to UPS battery installations in the USA. In some cases, fire codes do not clearly recognize improvements in battery safety resulting from changing battery technology. Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) batteries are frequently deployed within data centers and network rooms without the need for the elaborate safety systems that are required for Vented (Flooded) Lead Acid batteries. Proper interpretation of fire codes is therefore required when designing and implementing data centers and network rooms. | |||

Handle Industry-Standard XSDs in Java Using IBM Rational Software Architect | 2008-10-16 | IBM |
| Many applications need to represent data in one or more industry-standard message formats specified using XSD. XSD is often an ideal way to specify industry-standard message formats because it's broadly supported across platforms and programming languages (either natively or via libraries). However, even given this support, converting data stored in application-specific data structures into messages (usually XML messages) that conform to an XSD can present challenges due to the feature mismatches between these application-specific data structures and XSD.

Improving Rack Cooling Performance Using Airflow Management Blanking Panels | 2008-10-15 | American Power Conversion (APC) |
| Unused vertical space in open frame racks and rack enclosures creates an unrestricted recycling of hot air that causes equipment to heat up unnecessarily. The use of airflow management blanking panels can reduce this problem. This paper explains and quantifies the effects of airflow management blanking panels on cooling system performance. | |||

Is My DSL a Modeling or Programming Language? | 2008-10-15 | University of Maribor |
| It is often difficult to discern the differences between programming and modeling languages. As an example, the term "Domain-specific language" has been used almost interchangeably in academia and industry to represent both programming and modeling languages, which has caused subtle misconceptions. The borders between a modeling and programming language are somewhat vague and not defined crisply. This paper discusses the similarities and differences between modeling and programming languages, and offers some suggestions on how to better differentiate such languages. A list of criteria is presented for language classification, but it is suggested that a set of the criteria be used, rather than a single criterion. Several example domain-specific languages are used as case studies to motivate the discussion.

The Future of IT in a Flat World: CMDBs, Automation, and the IT Value Chain | 2008-10-13 | ASG Software Solutions |
| Using automation, IT operations can emulate the domestic supply chain's cost containment successes. At the same time, by recognizing that its own struggles are mirrored in the global supply chain, IT can grasp--from a business perspective--the technological capabilities it must have now to strategically move into the next generation of automation.
A configuration management database (CMDB) empowers IT executives to be proactive: it lends complete visibility to a flat world, introducing a new way of seeing IT and with it, new ways of operating. As IT's data broker, a federated CMDB accesses the information needed to automate business services as a whole, throughout their entire life cycle, wherever this data resides and regardless of its originating vendor. In coming years, as IT becomes more closely aligned with business, IT will be expected to change its products and services so they line up with customer demand. To achieve this, IT must have a flexible master CMDB. Its information model must be easily changeable to adapt to new security requirements, regulatory changes, asset reconfiguration, capacity adjustments, CI relationship modifications, and process alterations. Equipped with an adaptable, federated CMDB that is also a metadata repository, IT will accomplish end-to-end, highly adaptable business service automation. This achievement will, in turn, transform the current IT landscape, making it modular, responsive, and self-managing. CIOs will see farther, deeper, and faster than ever before; global transparency will be effortless; and the business value of IT will be a given, for the simple fact that, at the end of the day, the CMDB will bring IT executives closer to the consumer.
