A Systematic Approach for Improving the Quality of IT Data | 2008-07-06 | Hewlett-Packard |
| Efforts to reduce the cost of ownership for enterprise IT environments is spurring the development and deployment of data-driven management tools. Yet, IT data is imperfect and these imperfections can lead to inappropriate decisions that have significant technical and business consequences. Current responses to imperfections in IT data are ad-hoc and incremental owing to limited awareness of the problem and to data quality being an indirect business goal. In this paper, the authors begin by raising awareness of the imperfect IT data problem through examples of the imperfections that occur, and a discussion of their causes and implications on IT management tasks. The paper then introduces a systematic approach for addressing such imperfections.

A Semantic Wiki for Continual Collaborative Information Management | 2008-07-06 | Hewlett-Packard |
| The Grand Central semantic wiki is designed to merge the benefits of the quick and informal data entry styles common to wiki platforms with the robust data management capabilities of traditional enterprise content management systems. Incorporating many recent advances in web technologies, including wikis, semantic web technologies, RSS, and search as a primary data access interface, it seeks to speed and simplify collaboration in the enterprise. Based on user studies, this paper has developed an experimental prototype and is currently targeting a deployment to assist some field engineers.

DaaS: Data Warehousing as a Service - On-Demand Data Warehousing That Drives Business Insight | 2008-07-02 | Kognitio |
| To 'Design, build, deploy and run' a data warehouse as a service has been almost completely constrained by the fact that it has been too costly to undertake these activities and create data warehouses on a consistent and profitable basis. The process of building any analytical data warehouse has involved a fairly rigid process incorporating all four of these activities, plus a significant ETL and business analytics exercise. The major constraint in offering Data warehousing as a Service (DaaS) lies in the complexity, cost and time delays incurred in the execution of those activities. This process is often repeated for any upgrades and changes and hence constrains any thoughts of running a cost-effective data service.

Why Windows Enterprise Data Centers Are Choosing Emulex | 2008-07-01 | Emulex |
| Over 50% of the Windows-based SANs are Fibre Channel. Emulex is the dominant provider of Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters (HBA) for Windows-based SANs because of a history of delivering high performance, scalable, reliable connectivity solutions that offer the finest software architecture and the best interoperability and support. In this paper for customers choosing to deploy a Unified Fabric, Emulex Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) Converged Network Adapters (CNAs) offer comprehensive Windows support.

Using Database Advisors | 2008-07-01 | Oracle |
| Advisors are powerful tools that provide specific advice on how to address key database management challenges, covering a wide range of areas, including space, performance, and undo management. Advisors are built around two infrastructure components: Automatic Workload Repository (AWR), Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor (ADDM). This paper focuses on some of the database advisors that are invoked by ADDM to help one improve database performance. It presents sample questions of the type one may encounter when taking the Oracle Database 11g Administration Workshop I exam, which enables one to earn the Oracle Certified Associate level of certification.

Managing File Versions: Edit Files and Use Version Control in Oracle SQL Developer 1.5 | 2008-07-01 | Oracle |
| Oracle SQL Developer 1.5 expands its file-based support by introducing tight integration with the CVS and Subversion version control systems. In addition to letting one browse and edit files in the file system, this Oracle SQL Developer release enables to import files into the source control system, check them out, modify them, and commit the changed files back into the source control system. This column does not provide details about setting up source control systems, nor does it cover concepts and operations of these systems; rather, it discusses the use of these systems within Oracle SQL Developer and focuses on using Subversion.

Compress to Impress: Use Oracle Advanced Compression to Conserve Resources and Improve Performance | 2008-07-01 | Oracle |
| This paper shows how a forward-thinking person started looking at how to address exponential data growth and ended up addressing both that growth and the limitations of disk throughput by using Oracle Advanced Compression. He has effectively stored more data in less space, accomplishing more data transfer with the same throughput. Not only does it save Acme storage space, but it increases performance as well.

Managing History: Oracle Total Recall Enables Users to Find, Track, and Use Past and Present Information | 2008-07-01 | Oracle |
| Oracle Total Recall yields many benefits over traditional application- and trigger-based archival methods. First, archival data is tamper-proof. No database users, not even privileged users, can change the historical record. This level of security is increasingly demanded by government regulation. No programming effort is required. There are no archive tables to design, no code to write, and no triggers to debug. The result has far less risk that anyone will inadvertently damage the archive. Performance impact is minimal. There is no direct impact on transaction throughput, because the processes involved in archiving run asynchronously. Oracle Total Recall is implemented natively in Oracle Database and is application-transparent. One can implement it underneath a running application without making changes to existing code.

Oracle Symfony in PHP Minor | 2008-07-01 | Oracle |
| Symfony is a very popular model-View-Controller (MVC) framework for creating Web applications quickly and efficiently. Like many such tools, it uses an Object-Relational Mapper (ORM) called Propel. Symfony is a large and complex application generator with many options, and describing it in a relatively small article isn't an easy task. Most of the work is done with creating YAML description files, but there certainly are "Some assembly required" parts. This tool works perfectly with version control, there are numerous plug-in options, and it is relatively easy to learn and start using quickly. The current version, 1.0.15, has two major limitations: the complexity of the Propel ORM and lack of support for multicolumn foreign keys.

Modeling an Intrusion Detection System Using Data Mining and Genetic Algorithms Based on Fuzzy Logic | 2008-07-01 | Andhra University |
| Fuzzy logic based methods together with the techniques from Artificial Intelligence have gained importance. Data mining techniques like clustering techniques, Association rules together with fuzzy logic to model the fuzzy association rules are being used for classifying data. These together with the techniques of genetic algorithms like genetic programming are producing better results. The present paper proposes a model for intrusion detection systems for anomaly detection based on fuzzy association rules which use genetic programming. The model is implemented and tested on sample data with 40 variables and the results are documented in the paper. As the model includes the LGP,MEP and GEP where the three collectively tries to detect the intrusion to a great extent.
