Reducing the Risks of Managing Web Services Environments | 2006-09-14 01:00:16 | Compuware |
| IT systems have become the lifeblood of today's businesses, and are more business critical than ever before. With EMA's latest research showing the cost of downtime approaching $1M per minute for some companies, failure isn't an option. Along with this mandate, however, comes a dilemma. On their way to becoming intrinsic to the health of the business, IT systems have also become more diverse and more complex.
Diversity and complexity lend themselves to high support costs, and it is generally accepted that the cost of IT administration--supporting and maintaining IT systems--is currently between 60 and 80% of the total IT budget. This high cost is putting many companies in a vise. With higher fixed costs, businesses are limited in their ability to introduce new IT services that make them more competitive in their marketplace. On the other hand, falling behind the competition isn't an option either. Consequently, overall spending on IT continues to rise. There are multiple reasons why heterogeneity breeds complexity, and why complexity increases risk. One strategy for addressing these issues is to simplify, and since it's not likely that IT environments will become simpler any time soon, leading companies are increasingly looking to technology to do it for them. Next-generation technology can help absorb diversity and its accompanying risk. With built-in expert knowledge of application infrastructure, databases, and application execution, for example, products can dramatically reduce the effort required for proactive application management, root-cause analysis, and transaction optimization. The good news is that products are starting to come to market that build expert-level technical knowledge into automation. For organizations struggling with complexity, cost and the accompanying business risks, these products can be a welcome asset. |
