Optimizing Grid Site Manager Performance With Virtual Machines | 2007-01-07 01:00:31 | Hewlett-Packard |
| Virtualization can enhance the functionality and ease the management of current and future Grids by enabling on demand creation of services and virtual clusters with customized environments, QoS provisioning and policy-based resource allocation. This paper considers the use of Virtual Machines (VMs) in a data-center environment, where a significant portion of resources from a shared pool are dedicated to Grid job processing. The goal is to improve efficiency while supporting a variety of different workloads. The analysis reveals that a large fraction of Grid jobs have low CPU utilization, which suggests that using virtual machines to isolate execution of different Grid jobs on the shared hardware might be beneficial for optimizing the data-center resource usage. | |||

M-Switch X.400 Benchmarks | 2007-01-01 | Isode |
| This paper gives performance benchmarks for Isode's M-Switch X.400, a high-performance X.400 Message Transfer Agent. M-Switch X.400 is deployed by Isode customers in a number of solutions areas. The benchmarks re-enforce the belief that M-Switch X.400 is substantially faster than any other X.400 MTA. M-Switch X.400 supports the two core MTA (Message Transfer Agent) protocols: X.400 P3, for message submission and delivery and X.400 P1, for message transfer. Performance of P3 for message submission and delivery was measured as a part of benchmarking M-Store X.400 described in the whitepaper M-Store X.400 Benchmarks. These benchmarks focus on X.400 P1.

Bootstrapping the Long Tail in Peer to Peer Systems | 2007-01-07 01:00:31 | Hewlett-Packard |
| The provision of digitized content on-demand to millions of users presents a formidable challenge. With an ever increasing number of fixed and mobile devices with video capabilities, and a growing consumer base with different preferences, there is a need for a scalable and adaptive way of delivering a diverse set of files in real time to a worldwide consumer base. This paper describes an efficient incentive mechanism for P2P systems that generates a wide diversity of content offerings while responding adaptively to customer demand. The paper then analyzes the performance of such a system by making a set of assumptions that are first restrictive and are then relaxed so as to make them correspond to a realistic crowd of users. | |||

Architecture Students Thrive With HP Workstations | 2006-12-13 01:00:24 | Hewlett-Packard |
| At the renowned Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia, the goal of the School of Building Arts is to produce "Renaissance designers and architects" capable of challenging and redefining the standards in architectural design. This requires that the school keep students up to speed with design technology, which changes from year to year. HP technology is playing a critical role in that process. Acknowledging the increased dependence on workstations and PCs in the real world of design, the school's administrators convened several years ago to discuss the role of technology in the campus environment. Changes in school policy were made to boost the quality and quantity of computing technology. The school has acquired over 450 HP workstations. |
