whitepaper The Vector Approach to Data Center Power Planning2009-06-28 Eaton
Many data centers, including most of those built before 2001, are at risk of outstripping their capacity to power and cool their IT systems. Already, data centers consume 10-30 times more energy per square foot than the typical office building—a figure that has doubled in the last five years. Energy costs represent the single largest component of operating expense, and a potential barrier to future expansion. Does IT really have a handle on this trend?

More regularly and frequently, organizations are hitting fixed limits in their power systems—even systems that were designed and deployed fairly recently. With the volatile rate of change in IT technologies, power demands can quickly exceed established barriers in a legacy distribution system, such as the performance potential of existing amperage/voltage ratings, UPSs, cabling and connectors. The cost of upgrading, augmenting or replacing the power architecture can be astronomical. The costs often could have been minimized or avoided if the power planning process had simply been more forward-looking and holistic in the first place. This white paper describes an approach that considers the major milestones and thresholds in data center power requirements—and how planners should adjust their strategies and recommendations for data centers as they pass through different evolutionary stages.

whitepaper Cornell Uses High-Performance Computing to Speed Research, Extend Software Access2009-06-25 Microsoft
As one of the world's leading research institutions, Cornell University has been engaged in high-performance computing since that term referred to mainframe computing. More than 10 years ago, Cornell helped to pioneer the use of PC clusters. To give researchers - both at Cornell and at other institutions around the world - access to the most cost-effective platform for high-performance computing, the Cornell Center for Advanced Computing has migrated several installations to Windows HPC Server 2008. The result is that researchers are more productive, because they can focus on their research rather than on the underlying technology; researchers have access to a broader range of commercial and custom applications; and the computing platform is as cost-effective to administer as it is to use.

whitepaper Lean Communications - Enabling manufacturing processes through visual technologies2009-06-17 Tandberg
In every organization there are wasteful activities, both in operations and in communications. Seldom, however, are these activities conveniently labeled as wasteful, nor do these activities standout and beg for improvement. In fact, many of these activities masquerade as critical functions, consuming valuable resources with little return value. It wasn't long ago that manufacturers considered inventory a business asset. It took the application of Lean Manufacturing principles to reverse that thinking, pointing out that unsold inventory was a waste and a symptom of overproduction. Lean Communications— delivering the right information when it is needed, where it is needed—can have an equally profound impact on manufacturing.

whitepaper Data Center Automation in an Uncertain Economy2009-06-04 IBM
Today, organizations just like yours are under greater than ever pressures to do more with less. Many are implementing virtualization as a means to reduce costs. However, managing a virtualized environment presents its own unique challenges.

Reducing ongoing data center costs, improving utilization, and cost avoidance are three key areas where IBM can help, especially with our data center automation solutions. Effective management and automation of your virtualized environment can help you realize the benefits of virtualization with faster payback and drive down IT costs.

Ptak, Noel & Associates analyst Jasmine Noel will share her findings on how Tivoli's data center automation solutions can help you reduce costs and get your payback faster by automating complex tasks and processes in the datacenter. You'll also hear from Kendall Lock, director of IBM's Rome Lab, about how the lab is using some of Tivoli's own solutions to gain improved operational efficiency.

Register today to attend this live IBM event on July 14th, 2009 at 12:00 PM ET / 9 AM PT.

Speakers:

Jasmine Noel, Founding Partner, Ptak, Noel and Associates

Kendall Lock, Director, IBM SWG Rome Lab Software Development Facility

whitepaper University Finds Windows HPC Server 26% Faster Than Linux, More Cost-Effective2009-06-01 Microsoft
University of Arizona, based in Tucson, is the leading public research university in the American Southwest, producing more than U.S. $530 million in annual research. When researchers at the NSF Center for Autonomic Computing at the University of Arizona investigated the technology to set up a cluster for autonomic computing research that could largely monitor, manage, and repair itself, they faced a choice between Linux and Windows HPC Server 2008. They chose Windows. Benchmark testing has confirmed that choice, showing Windows HPC Server to be 26 percent faster than Linux.

whitepaper Animators Save $200,000 in Production Costs With High-Performance Computing System2009-06-01 Microsoft
Moscow, Russia - based Glukoza Production develops computer animation for television and movies. The company is working on its first full-length animated feature film. Glukoza Production needed a more powerful environment to handle computer animation for a high-definition, full-length film. The company upgraded to a Windows - based high-performance computing solution, which its IT team quickly deployed and which has led to up to 25 percent faster rendering. With that increased efficiency, Glukoza will be able to release its movie up to four months sooner and will be U.S. $200,000 more profitable on the project.
