Enhancing SQL Reporting Services with Double-Take | 2008-01-01 | Double-Take Software |
| Microsoft SQL Reporting Services is an exciting way for organizations to gain access and insight into their important business data stored in Microsoft SQL Server. This white paper provides an overview of how Double-Take can greatly increase your production server's performance by offloading Microsoft SQL Reporting Services to a secondary server. When recoverability matters, depend on Double-Take Software to protect and recover business critical data and applications.

Requirements for XML Document Database Systems | 2008-01-01 | University of Waterloo |
| The shift from SGML to XML has created new demands for managing structured documents. Many XML documents will be transient representations for the purpose of data exchange between different types of applications, but there will also be a need for effective means to manage persistent XML data as a database. This paper explores requirements for an XML database management system. The purpose of the paper is not to suggest a single type of system covering all necessary features. Instead the purpose is to initiate discussion of the requirements arising from document collections, to offer a context in which to evaluate current and future solutions, and to encourage the development of proper models and systems for XML database management.

XParent: An Efficient RDBMS-Based XML Database System | 2008-01-01 | Hong Kong University of Science and Technology |
| The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is an emerging standard for data representation and exchange on the Internet. In order to facilitate the task of querying XML documents, efficient storage models for storing XML documents in database systems were studied. There are basically three alternatives: storing XML data in repositories designed for semistructured data, in object-oriented databases, and in relational systems. A number of systems, such as Lore, XML GL and Tamino also provide query interfaces for users. This paper will present, XParent, an XML document management system built on top of RDBMS.

Introducing Trigger Support for XML Database Systems | 2008-01-01 | ISP RAS |
| There is a growing number of XML database systems of different kinds now on the market. XML DBMS vendors rushed to enrich their products with more flexible and advanced features to make them satisfy the requirements of modern applications. And the time is ripe for the database research community to study the issues involved with extending XML DBMS with capabilities analogous to those that are popular in traditional DBMS, keeping in mind that XML databases now become a widespread means for storing and exchanging information on the Web, and increasingly used in dynamic applications such as e-commerce.

XML-to-SQL Query Translation Literature: The State of the Art and Open Problems | 2008-01-01 | University of Wisconsin |
| Recently, the database research literature has seen an explosion of publications with the goal of using an RDBMS to store and/or query XML data. The problems addressed and solved in this area are diverse. This diversity renders it difficult to know how the various results presented fit together, and even makes it hard to know what open problems remain. As a first step to rectifying this situation, the paper presents a classification of the problem space and discusses how almost 40 papers fit into this classification. As a result of this study, they find that some basic questions are still open.

Enforcing Modeling Guidelines in an ORDBMS-Based UML-Repository | 2008-01-01 | University of Kaiserslautern |
| Due to its rich set of modeling concepts and its broad application spectrum the Unified Modeling Language (UML) has become widely accepted for modeling many aspects of software systems. Since UML is not related to any particular design method, each software development project has to establish its own modeling guidelines. Hence, tool support is needed for guiding the developer throughout the modeling process and for enforcing project-related integrity of UML models. This paper presents the approach for enforcing guidelines in UML-based software development processes. For managing UML models, the paper implemented a UML repository on top of an Object-Relational Database Management System (ORDBMS). Guidelines are expressed as OCL constraints and are enforced either automatically, i. e., by the UML repository, or on user demand.

Accessing a DB2 Data Warehouse Using DB Connect in SAP BI 7.0 | 2007-12-20 | IBM |
| The goal of this paper is to draw together all the steps needed to configure a Virtual Provider in SAP to access external DB2 data. SAP documentation covers most of the SAP-related configuration issues, so this paper duplicates some of the information in the SAP help documents. However, the SAP help documents to not link the SAP activities together with the DB2 configuration, and they also pass over the wrinkles discussed later in this paper, such as incorrect field mappings, that can cause problems in configuring a DB connect Virtual Provider on an external DB2 system.

Oracle IT Modernization Series: The Types of Modernization | 2007-12-01 | Oracle |
| Today's IT organizations are looking to reduce costs, increase their ability to react quickly to ongoing business demands, and reduce the risk of reliance on legacy skill sets while also adhering to ever-increasing compliance demands. In an effort to carry out this difficult task, organizations are turning to IT modernization as a solution. With IT modernization, organizations are looking to move to an open systems modernization architecture that combines a high-powered infrastructure - consisting of a grid of computer hardware, operating system, and database and application servers - with an orchestrated service-oriented components and a User Interface and Business Intelligence layer that provides access form of portals, mobile devices, Business-to-Business (B-to-B) communications as well as other access mechanisms that are required in today's dynamic business world.

Oracle Secure Backup 10.2 Policy-Based Backup Management | 2007-12-01 | Oracle |
| Reliable data protection in the enterprise extends beyond simple tape backup to multi-tiered data protection strategies based on criticality of data, Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and retention meeting business and regulatory requirements. Tape media remains the cornerstone of enterprise data protection providing the most affordable, reliable media for long-term backup storage. Enterprise environments consistently manage 1000s of backup tapes with differing retention periods, multiple tape storage locations and security requirements making effective tape backup management critical to the IT infrastructure.

Lowering Database Storage Complexity and Management Cost With HP Thin Provisioning XP and Oracle Database 10g and 11g | 2007-12-01 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| This paper explores and outlines how to apply HP StorageWorks XP Thin Provisioning and other HP XP technologies to help simplify and manage an Oracle Database 10g/11g environment. HP Thin Provisioning (ThP) provides significant capacity usage reductions as it allows administrators to allocate storage based on traditional methods, but only consumes the actual disk capacity accessed by the application. This decreases storage over allocations and reduces wasted capacity. Oracle Database 11g features - Automatic Storage Management (ASM), Auto-Extend and Table Partitions - introduce important management cost and time savings through automation of previously tedious and intricate manual database and storage administrator tasks.
