In June 2004 the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision issued its most recent version of the Basel II Accord, designed to align capital adequacy assessment more closely with the key elements of banking risks and to provide incentives for banks to enhance their risk management by developing internal rating systems. A student in the Doctorate Program in Law and Economics at the University of Siena in Italy has been researching how banks estimate the probability of default under the Basel II proposals. The student chose SAS software to conduct his analysis.
