whitepaper NIOSH Provides Occupational Health Data to State Agencies With SAS to Augment Research2006-12-27 01:00:56 SAS Institute
State agencies in charge of monitoring the well-being of workers once faced the daunting challenge of manually sifting through U.S. Census data and county death certificates to determine if, for example, coal miners were indeed at greater risk for respiratory ailments than, say, office workers. Such associations and determinations enable them to establish policies to protect workers while ensuring that they can continue to go about their jobs. Using SAS, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has created a Web-based, automated reporting system to assist the states in monitoring the health and well-being of their citizens. Known as National Occupational Respiratory Mortality System (NORMS), the reporting system is a data storage and interactive data-retrieval system developed and maintained by NIOSH.
whitepaper SAS Analyzes Inmate Data Alongside Fiscal and HR Data2006-12-27 01:00:56 SAS Institute
Hoping to increase system efficiencies and improve prisoner success rates, many state and county corrections systems provide education, life and work skills, and alcohol and drug treatment programs. But oftentimes, those who are footing the bill - voters, state legislatures and county budgeting offices - question the effectiveness of these programs. In Oregon, those questions are being addressed with the help of SAS. Questions like: Are education and treatment programs reducing prison cycles? Are cognitive programs decreasing inmate-on-staff assaults? Are department operations fiscally sound? Is recidivism dropping? The Oregon Department Of Corrections (ODOC) Research and Evaluation unit can assist in answering these and other questions with a new system that uses SAS for data warehousing and analysis.
