whitepaper Navigating SAS Mapping Technologies2006-05-04 03:21:20 SAS Institute
Every organization has location-based data. The difficulty is in effectively transforming that data into useful information or intelligence. SAS has numerous powerful mapping technologies and tools to transform with the location data. This paper provides a brief overview of these technologies and tools. The mapping technologies include all of the methods of viewing maps and the mapping tools include some new and important tools for dealing with spatial data. Some of the mapping technologies use ESRI's ArcGIS software to display the maps. The mapping technologies have been divided into several groups. These include those that use ArcGIS desktop software, ESRI's ArcGIS server software, SAS/GIS software and SAS/Graph mapping software.
whitepaper Visualizing Email Content: Portraying Relationships From Conversational Histories2006-04-20 06:07:07
This paper presents Themail, a visualization that portrays relationships using the interaction histories preserved in email archives. Using the content of exchanged messages, it shows the words that characterize one's correspondence with an individual and how they change over the period of the relationship. This paper describes the interface and content-parsing algorithms in Themail. It also presents the results from a user study where two main interaction modes with the visualization emerged: exploration of "big picture" trends and themes in email (haystack mode) and more detail-oriented exploration (needle mode). Finally, the paper discusses the limitations of the content parsing approach in Themail and the implications for further research on email content visualization.
whitepaper Extreme Budgeting: Pushing Excel to Its Limits... and Beyond2006-09-08 01:00:28 Applix
The budgeting process has evolved greatly over the last couple of decades, not just because the businesses have evolved, but also because in 1979 - VisiCalc - the world's first spreadsheet was created. Since that time, doing budgeting has become synonymous with using a spreadsheet. Today, it is unthinkable to attempt budgeting without using a spreadsheet. In this paper, Applix offers several tips and tricks to squeeze every last bit of power and functionality out of Excel to make the budgeting easier, quicker, and more accurate. The paper also explains the limits of Excel in coping with today's planning and budgeting requirements, and provide an overview of Applix TM1, an analytical platform that works in conjunction with Excel.
whitepaper HP Scalable Visualization Array: Using Industry Standard Technology and Open Source Software to Add Visualization Capability to Clusters of Linux Systems2006-01-04 01:01:52 Hewlett-Packard
HP's advanced visualization system, the HP Scalable Visualization Array (SVA), is an innovative system that leverages advances in clustering, graphics, and networking technology. The SVA provides scientists and engineers with the visualization and analytical power they need to solve some of today's most challenging technical problems. This paper explains the rationale for HP's visualization system, its architecture, capabilities, components, and implementation.
whitepaper The Managed Spreadsheet Environment: How to Preserve the Best and Most Useful Features of Spreadsheets While Mitigating the Risks and Expense Caused by Unbridled Shadow IT2006-09-08 01:00:28 Actuate
A managed spreadsheet environment effectively retains all of the benefits of using spreadsheets are personal software, but eliminates substantial amounts of risk and cost. Implementing this environment will be challenging, though, as there are only a few technology providers able to provide the capability. An even greater challenge will be convincing organizations that Shadow IT is not only a problem, but a problem that can be solved. And the greatest problem of all will be convincing those who rely on spreadsheets to do their jobs that the managed spreadsheet environment not only will not make their job more difficult, but that it is a good idea.
whitepaper Baby Names, Visualization, and Social Data Analysis2006-12-09 01:00:18 IBM
The Name Voyager, a web-based visualization of historical trends in baby naming, has proven remarkably popular. This paper discusses the interaction techniques it uses for smooth visual exploration of thousands of time series. It also describes design decisions behind the application and lessons learned in creating an application that makes do-it-oneself data mining popular. The prime lesson, it is hypothesized, is that an information visualization tool may be fruitfully viewed not as a tool but as part of an online social environment. In other words, to design a successful exploratory data analysis tool, one good strategy is to create a system that enables "Social" data analysis.
whitepaper Enterprise Business Intelligence: Strategies and Technologies for Deploying BI on an Enterprise Scale2007-04-10 14:59:40 Hyperion
Since its inception, Business Intelligence (BI) has empowered companies by providing direct access to information they can use to:
  • Make better decisions
  • Create more effective business plans
  • Respond more quickly to problems and opportunities
Eager to reap the full benefits of business intelligence, many businesses now want to transform BI from a departmental to a company-wide initiative. Read this in-depth report from The Data Warehouse Institute (TDWI) for more information on standardizing BI across your entire enterprise.

whitepaper Levanta Marries Provisioning with Data Virtualization2007-01-23 19:43:02 Levanta
So many vendors provide console-based systems provisioning these days that it's hard to keep track of the differences—both claimed and real—between them. If that weren't enough, there's another (smaller) set of products that do data virtualization of one sort or another. Find out how the marriage of these two approaches--provisioning and data virtualization--enables the rapid provisioning and on-going management of scale-out computing--from 10s or 100s to 1000s of Linux systems.
whitepaper Financial Reporting and Analysis: A Tactical Solution for an Age-Old Challenge - Dynamically Leverage the Capabilities of Microsoft Excel2006-09-08 01:00:28 Global Software
The organization's ability to dynamically realize its financial information in a familiar format like Excel is paramount in terms of providing C-level executives an instant and accurate picture of a company's financial anatomy. Spreadsheet solutions achieve a long-sought goal of an instant corporate financial "X-ray," easily organizing and revealing the corporation's entire financial life in real-time in Excel. The application of a tactical spreadsheet solution for financial reporting pain is the ultimate complement to the enterprise environment in the 21st century.
whitepaper Tips and Tricks III: More Unique SAS/GRAPH Maps2006-05-04 03:29:01 SAS Institute
Every organization has location-based data. The difficulty is in effectively transforming that data into useful information or intelligence. SAS/GRAPH has powerful mapping capabilities that can be used for visualizing the location data as geographic and non-geographic maps. This paper presents techniques and examples for harnessing that power and creating these maps. The key to building effective maps is to understand the building blocks available. With this understanding, one can choose the most appropriate components to construct the map. This paper gives an overview of SAS/GRAPH mapping components and highlights specific techniques used to build a few attention-grabbing maps.
