  Republic Polytechnic of Singapore is a new and unique higher education institution dedicated to delivering Problem-Based Learning (PBL) to students in a paperless environment. A rapid increase to 3,700 students was causing its IT infrastructure to experience high database usage spikes. The Polytechnic worked with Microsoft Services on a proof of concept to upgrade its database to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, using the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 development system. It is taking advantage of the 64-bit capacity in SQL Server 2005 to split the database into multiple servers and ease any load problems. Faster transaction times now mean students and staff no longer experience sluggish performance at critical times, such as during the online understanding test.
