Community College District Upgrades to Centralized, Scalable Student Database | 2007-09-28 | Microsoft |
| The Maricopa Community Colleges (MCCCD) in Arizona relied on 10 individual mainframe computers, one per college, to handle its business processes and its Student Information System (SIS). The complex mainframe environment not only required a great deal of customization but also kept student records at multiple sites. Seeking a centralized solution that would provide each student with a single data record, MCCCD contacted Hewlett-Packard (HP), Microsoft, and Intel. Representatives from the three companies, through the HP Microsoft Frontline Partnership, recommended HP hardware, Itanium technology, and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 to build a new Student Information System and a Decision Support System. The solution has helped the Maricopa Community Colleges build a reliable infrastructure that can grow with expanding enrollment and improve support services.

Follow the Trend or Make a Difference: The Evolution of Collective Opinions | 2007-09-25 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| No aspect of the massive participation in content creation that the web enables is more evident than in the countless number of opinions, news and product reviews that are constantly posted on the Internet. Given their importance their temporal evolution was analyzed in a number of scenarios. It was found that ignorance of previous views leads to a uniform sampling of the range of opinions among a community. Exposure of previous opinions to potential reviewers induces a trend following process which leads to the expression of increasingly extreme views. When the expression of an opinion is costly and previous views are known, a selection bias softens the extreme views, as people exhibit a tendency to speak out differently from previous opinions. | |||
