Case Study: 250 Schools Access Apps via Virtualisation Hub | 2008-06-04 | Microsoft |
| Warwickshire, a county in central England with a population of more than 500,000 people, is bridging the digital divide by providing essential computer programs to primary and secondary school students. In December 2007, Warwickshire County Council ICT Development Service (ICTDS) installed a solution based on the Windows Server® 2008 Enterprise operating system. Students and staff from more than 250 schools can now use the applications they need anytime, from anywhere with an Internet connection, through a central virtualisation hub. Using virtualised applications and servers has dramatically reduced the cost of onsite software, deployment, and maintenance, while increasing data security.

Stopping data leakage: Exploiting your existing security investment | 2008-06-01 | Sophos |
| As attitudes to work and information continue to evolve away from those of the past, organizations have become more aware of the acute need to control the information that flows into, through, and out of their networks. This paper demonstrates the need for a high-profile acceptable use policy to prevent data leakage, gives practical guidance on how to use current investments in IT security technologies at the gateway and endpoint to support this policy, and describes where new investment should realistically be made.

The Information Perspective of SOA Design, Part 8: Use of IBM WebSphere Information Analyzer in SOA Design | 2008-05-22 | IBM |
| WebSphere Information Analyzer is a tool that allows for profiling and discovery of quality related aspects of existing data stores. It also helps users perform gap analysis between source and target systems. This paper demonstrates to an architect community how tools from IBM - in particular IBM WebSphere Information Analyzer and the unified metadata management of IBM Information Server - can be used to address the data quality analysis pattern in an SOA engagement. It describes the key features of the products that support the data quality analysis pattern presented in Part 6 of this series.

Packaging and Reselling Information: Does Your Information Architecture Take Advantage of All Market Opportunities? | 2008-05-20 | IBM |
| Over the past few months, this series has explored many of the elements involved in the creation of a successful information architecture design. Once the user has set up the design that works best for the organization, the user might be tempted to sit back and relax. But there is one more item to consider: The design potentially holds information that some people might be willing to pay a lot of money for. If the user hasn't yet thought of packaging and reselling that information to make money for the organization, now might be the time to consider it. The most common use of the information retrieved from the design is for mailing lists.

Information Architecture Essentials, Part 7: Data-Store Design - The Role of Information Architecture in Data-Store Design | 2008-05-13 | IBM |
| Valuable business information should never be left sitting around. It should be organized and saved into a permanent data store. In the past, these data stores were represented by large filing rooms filled with cabinets. Today, the same goal is achieved by using relational and other types of electronic databases. Just like those dusty file systems of yore, a legacy database tends to become the final resting place for useful business information - and this information is essentially lost, because it can't be accessed in a meaningful way. Data-store design can help the user establish an efficient mechanism to store and retrieve valuable business information.

Accelerating Enterprise Data Governance Part 1 | 2008-05-09 | DataFlux |
| In the first of this series of three white papers, Mike Ferguson of Intelligent Business Strategies defines what data governance is and then looks at the requirements that need to be met for full data governance to be implemented. He also discusses how to systematically build re-usable data services to automate the tasks needed to formally govern data on an enterprisewide basis in order to accelerate the time to production and guarantee rock-solid data.

Key Questions From an Enterprise Data Architect: Plan for Project Success by Taking Measurements of the Relevant Data | 2008-05-06 | IBM |
| Data is the lifeblood of the enterprise, and the best way to prepare for a development and integration project is to document the characteristics of the data that drive the target applications. Learn the key questions that an enterprise data architect should explore in order to effectively document the characteristics of relevant data and take the most important first step towards project success. There are many software development methodologies, but all of them emphasize the importance of the analysis portion of the life cycle. During analysis, one looks to clearly understand the problem and create use cases. One documents requirements and user-acceptance criteria. One documents the social and technological environment in which the software is to be used.
