whitepaper Use of Recurrent Neural Networks for Strategic Data Mining of Sales Information2008-01-01 University of Wisconsin
An increasing number of organizations are involved in the development of strategic information systems for effective linkages with their suppliers, customers, and other channel partners involved in transportation, distribution, warehousing and maintenance activities. An efficient inter-organizational inventory management system based on data mining techniques is a significant step in this direction. This paper discusses the use of neural network based data mining and knowledge discovery techniques to optimize inventory levels in a large medical distribution company. The paper defines the inventory patterns, describes the process of constructing and choosing an appropriate neural network, and highlights problems related to mining of very large quantities of data.

whitepaper Lessons Learned in Master Data Management2007-12-13 Investcorp
Master Data Management (MDM) is getting the attention it deserves. In hindsight, it's surprising how master data that forms the foundation of any enterprise initiative was never discussed holistically when organizations initiated multimillion dollar initiatives such as Customer Relationship Management (CRM), supply chain integration/optimization, Data Warehousing (DW), Business Intelligence (BI) and other integration-related initiatives. It probably is one primary reason for many of these initiatives not delivering their anticipated value. Master data is the most important and, in fact, the only information asset available to integrate data and business processes in a seamless manner.

whitepaper Seeing the Big Picture: A Corporate Guide to Better Decisions through IT2007-12-04 SAP
Executives at small and midsize companies make critical business decisions every day based on the information available to them. This information can come from a variety of sources: opinions from peers and colleagues; a personal sense of intuition or business judgment; or data derived internally or externally to the organization. This is particularly worrisome given the lack of confidence in data available to decision makers: a 2007 report conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and commissioned by Business Objects found that nine out of ten corporate executives admit to making important decisions on the basis of inadequate information.

Read this Technology Evaluation Centers paper for information on how to use Information Technology to drive better information quality and better decision-making.

whitepaper Business Continuity: No Longer Out of Reach2007-12-01 Dell
Business continuity has historically been out of reach for small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) because it was too costly and complicated. While large companies could afford expensive fibre channel storage area networks (FC SANs), the highly trained staff to manage them, duplicate data centers, channel extenders, and expensive replication software, SMBs were restricted to making backup tapes and carting them to the storage administrator's basement for safe keeping.

Today that has changed, and organizations of every size can affordably build an infrastructure that offers all levels of protection without exorbitant costs or specially trained staff. Advanced functionality that was first developed for mainframe environments has been improved over time, making it available to UNIX, Linux, and Windows environments. As a result, company size and platform selection no longer determine functionality level. This is due to multiple technological advances -- in particular intelligent storage, iSCSI connectivity, server virtualization, and wide-area network (WAN) acceleration.

And it's a good thing, because data is just as critical for SMBs as for large companies -- and downtime can be much more damaging. This paper looks at how any company can create an affordable infrastructure that delivers the full spectrum of protection -- from simple data protection to disaster recovery to business continuity.

whitepaper Integrating Consumer Demand to Improve Shipment Forecasts2007-12-01 SAS Institute
Integrating consumer demand to improve shipment forecasts has become a high priority in the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry over the past several years. Until recently, many factors such as data collection and storage constraints, poor data synchronization capabilities, technology limitations and limited internal analytical expertise have made it impossible to either integrate with consumer demand or link to shipment forecasts. With improvements in technology, data collection and storage, along with improved analytical knowledge, CPG companies are now looking to integrate consumer demand with their shipment forecasts to capture the impact of marketing activities on shipments. As a result, Multi-Tiered Causal Analysis (MTCA) is receiving renewed interest.

whitepaper A Change in the Paradigm: The Rise of the New Enterprise Data Center2007-12-01 IBM
The paradigm for the modern enterprise data center, which has served businesses admirably for many years, is looking increasingly brittle. The strains posed by disruptive technological innovations and ever-changing service demands required by business units, coupled with budgetary pressures as well as increasing requirements for security, resiliency, and performance have pushed the data center quite literally to the breaking point. Like a juggler with too many balls in the air at one time, today's data center executive feels like he or she can barely manage to keep a data center running, much less develop a vision for tomorrow's data center architecture.

whitepaper Windows Enterprise Data Protection with Symantec Backup Exec2007-12-01 Symantec
Today's enterprises face a growing data protection challenge: how to optimize the backup and recovery of a volume of business-critical data that grows larger each and, in many cases, doubles each year. Most enterprises are finding that their IT footprint and storage resources continue to grow at a rate of 40 to 50 percent per year, which adds considerable complexity to their existing data protection strategies. This challenge becomes yet more difficult as companies migrate from stand-alone Windows server backups to enterprise site-wide backups that are performed across the local area network and storage area network environments.

With the data protection landscape becoming more distributed and IT resources increasingly constrained, businesses need a centralized data protection strategy that can efficiently manage multiple backup and recovery jobs across the enterprise. In addition, the data protection strategy must be able to support an off-host backup strategy to efficiently minimize the impact on mission-critical applications and network user interruption, and take advantage of the speed of disk-based data protection.

Symantec Backup Exec 12 addresses these critical enterprise challenges with the following cutting-edge features: Central Admin Server Option, SAN Shared Storage Option, and dynamic disk-based data protection which is the subject of this paper.

whitepaper Maps and Data Sets Supplied With SAS/GIS Software2007-12-01 SAS Institute
Several SAS/GIS sample maps and their associated data sets are supplied with SAS/GIS Software. These maps reside in the MAPS library, along with map data sets shipped with SAS/GRAPH Software. These maps can be used for exploring the software or for demonstration purposes. To open the sample maps, invoke SAS/GIS and select File => Open Map, or right-mouse on the GIS Map window and select Open map. Select the MAPS library, followed by the catalog and map name. Three sets of sample maps are included with SAS/GIS Software, and two maps are created by the SAS/GIS Tutorial. The following list provides the name of the map, and the spatial data sets, catalogs, and data sets associated with each map. The format of the map name is MAPS.catalog.map-name.

whitepaper Exporting SAS/GRAPH Output to PDF Files From Release 8.2 and Higher2007-12-01 SAS Institute
The Portable Document Format is a common format for storing text and graphics in a single document. This format supports high-resolutions and maintains the page layout when transmitted, viewed, and printed. The format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and is based upon the PostScript printer language. The program most often used to view PDF files is Adobe's Acrobat Reader. From SAS/GRAPH there are two basic methods for exporting graphs to PDF files: the native device drivers: PDF and PDFC, The Universal Printer: PDF.

whitepaper Import Data Into Office Publisher, Visio, or Word by Using the Data Connection Wizard2007-12-01 Microsoft
There is a world of data outside of the Microsoft Office Publisher, Visio, or Word program that one can use inside each program. But how does the user import the data and secure it? It is all about making the right connections. Data in one's program can come from an external data source, such as a text file, a workbook, or a database. This external data source is connected to the program through a data connection, which is a set of information that describes how to locate, log in, and access the external data source. The main benefit of connecting to external data is this: One can periodically analyze this data without repeatedly copying the data. Repeatedly copying data is an operation that can be time-consuming and error-prone.
