SAS Tile Charts: Thousands of Business Tips With One Click | 2009-04-01 | SAS Institute |
| The ever-growing complexity, increasing size, and increasing availability of business information make getting to the critical issues a major challenge. As such, one can either add 100 or so "Executive dashboard" links using the Web browser or, maybe one wants to consider a well-organized SAS tile chart to grab and focus attention on those issues that require immediate action. This paper outlines the capabilities and business uses of the SAS tile chart. The SAS tile chart looks like the landscape of Kansas when viewed from a window seat on the favorite airline, but its effective use of the color, size, and data tips in a hierarchical grid communicates important business intelligence information. | |||

IT Team Uses Collaborative Tools to Create an Innovative Healthcare Application | 2009-04-01 | Microsoft |
| Montefiore Medical Center is a full-service, integrated health delivery system in the New York City region. It includes four hospitals, a large home healthcare agency, and a 25-site medical group. Montefiore's Emerging Health IT team wanted a tool that could quickly deliver medical and statistical data on treatments and outcomes to help doctors improve the quality of care and services to patients. The team created "Clinical Looking Glass," designed with Microsoft development tools, including Visual Studio 2008 Team System, to help physicians evaluate patient treatments and outcomes quickly and easily.

Workflows for Visualizing Data Mining Results | 2009-04-01 | Technical University of Denmark |
| The author reviews methods and tools for visualizations in neuroimaging as well as point to some of the problems with interpreting such visualizations. The author furthermore describes Internet-based visualization and information visualization. The author focuses on workflows associated with the Brede Toolbox for display of data mining results. A few neuroinformatics databases now exist that record results from neuroimaging studies in the form of brain coordinates in stereotaxic space. The Brede Toolbox was originally developed to extract, analyze and visualize data from one of them - the BrainMap database. Since then the Brede Toolbox has expanded and now includes its own database with coordinates along with ontologies for brain regions and functions: The Brede Database.

Performance Monitors White Paper: The IPS and VA Technology Advantage | 2009-04-01 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| Performance displays that use IPS and VA liquid-crystal technologies provide significant advantages compared to the TN technology found in standard LCDs. Better visual accuracy and improved productivity are important to businesses today and in the future. HP's performance LCD monitors meet these visual and performance requirements, and they are rigorously tested with HP workstations and graphics for maximum compatibility. In addition, HP performance monitors feature multi-axis adjustments and a quick release stand for wall and arm mounting - making the displays easily adaptable to changing environments.

Thousands of On-Line Observers Is Just the Beginning | 2009-03-21 | SPIE |
| Web-based or on-line experiments are still a relatively new research topic. Laboratory or highly controlled experiments are, for many reasons, the preferred methodology for visual experiments. However recent experiments suggest that on-line experiments have some unique properties and advantages that may in some cases outweigh or offset their disadvantages. This paper will consider on-line experiments from both a general and a narrow perspective. Specifically a range of specific experiments, and on-line tools, will be considered from a broad vantage and possible themes or considerations for these experiments will be considered. | |||

Parallax Photography: Creating 3D Cinematic Effects From Stills | 2009-03-14 | Microsoft |
| This paper presents an approach to convert a small portion of a light field with extracted depth information into a cinematic effect with simulated, smooth camera motion that exhibits a sense of 3D parallax. The paper develops a taxonomy of the cinematic conventions of these effects, distilled from observations of documentary film footage and organized by the number of subjects of interest in the scene. The paper presents an automatic, content-aware approach to apply these cinematic conventions to an input light field. A face detector identifies subjects of interest. The paper then optimizes for a camera path that conforms to a cinematic convention, maximizes apparent parallax, and avoids missing information in the input.

Collaborative Brushing and Linking for Co-Located Visual Analytics of Document Collections | 2009-03-06 | EUROGRAPHICS Association |
| Many real-world analysis tasks can benefit from the combined efforts of a group of people. Past research has shown that to design visualizations for collaborative visual analytics tasks, one needs to support both individual as well as joint analysis activities. The paper presents Cambiera, a tabletop visual analytics tool that supports individual and collaborative information foraging activities in large text document collections. The paper defines collaborative brushing and linking as an awareness mechanism that enables analysts to follow their own hypotheses during collaborative sessions while still remaining aware of the group's activities. With Cambiera, users are able to collaboratively search through documents, maintaining awareness of each others' work and building on each others' findings.

PROC GEOCODE: Creating Map Locations From Your Data | 2009-02-27 | SAS Institute |
| Every business or organization has a lot of data that includes an address. The address data is useful only if it is transformed into location information that can be viewed on a map, used in distance calculations, or processed in other similar ways. To make this data useful, one must convert the address to a location having a latitude and longitude. This conversion process is called geocoding. If the address is an IP address, the process is usually called geolocating. This paper will discuss both geocoding and geolocating using PROC GEOCODE. First, one will introduce the concepts needed to understand geocoding, and then one will discuss PROC GEOCODE's current and planned functionality. Finally, examples will show how to use PROC GEOCODE.
