Information Visualization With Text Data Mining for Knowledge Discovery Tools in Bioinformatics | 2009-07-18 | Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology |
| An abundant amount of information is produced in the digital domain, and an effective Information Extraction (IE) system is required to surf through this sea of information. This paper shows that an interactive visualization system works effectively to complement an IE system. In particular, three-Dimensional (3D) visualization can turn a data-centric system into a user-centric one by facilitating the human visual system as a powerful pattern recognizer to become a part of the IE cycle. Because information as data is multidimensional in nature, 2D visualization has been the preferred mode. However, one argues that the extra dimension available for them in a 3D mode provides a valuable space where one can pack an orthogonal aspect of the available information.

Internet Special Ops - Stalking Badness Through Data Mining | 2009-07-11 | Internet Systems Consortium |
| Today's Internet threats are global in nature. Identifying, enumerating and mitigating these incidents require the collection and analysis of unprecedented amounts of data, which is only possible through data mining techniques. The paper will provide an overview of what data mining is, and provide several examples of how it is used to identify fast flux botnets and how the same techniques were used to enumerate Conficker.

Data Mining and Collusion Resistance | 2009-07-03 | Bowling Green State University |
| The field of data mining provides techniques for new knowledge discovery - finding patterns in the data set such as classifiers and association rules that may be useful to the data miner. Privacy preserving data mining seeks to allow users to share data while ensuring individual and corporate privacy concerns are addressed. Recently algorithms have been introduced to maintain privacy even when all but two parties collude. This paper builds upon previous algorithms, putting cycle-partitioned secure sum into the mathematical framework of edge-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles.

Web Data Mining System Based on Web Services | 2009-07-02 | Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers |
| Web data mining is a key technology to find meaningful patterns and rules from the WWW online mass data. Because of the complexity of Web data, currently a lot of manufacturers are committing to develop specialized software for Web Mining and distributed data mining. This paper puts forward an architecture and implementation prototype of Web data mining system based on web service, and further illustrates their availability through case study.

USA Drug Improves Company Performance by Speeding Access to Data With Web-Based Solution | 2009-07-01 | Oracle |
| USA Drug wanted to improve reporting processes to reduce reliance on cumbersome spreadsheets and expand analytical capabilities and automate report distribution to facilitate swift decision-making on key matters. The challenge was to provide faster and easier access to information with Web-based reporting and reduce IT and maintenance costs. USA Drug expanded the company's implementation of Oracle's Hyperion Essbase and implemented Oracle's Hyperion Web Analysis to improve reporting by converting legacy spreadsheet models to dynamic Web-based analysis dashboards and reduced reporting documentation load from hundreds of spreadsheets to 20 documents with streamlined reporting processes. | |||

Sustainable Operation and Management of Data Center Chillers Using Temporal Data Mining | 2009-07-01 | Association for Computing Machinery |
| Data centers are a critical component of modern IT infrastructure but are also among the worst environmental offenders through their increasing energy usage and the resulting large carbon footprints. Efficient management of data centers, including power management, networking, and cooling infrastructure, is hence crucial to sustainability. In the absence of a "First-principles" approach to man-age these complex components and their interactions, data-driven approaches have become attractive and tenable. The paper presents a temporal data mining solution to model and optimize performance of data center chillers, a key component of the cooling infrastructure. It helps bridge raw, numeric, time-series information from sensor streams toward higher level characterizations of chiller behavior, suit-able for a data center engineer.

Text Mining for Safety: Develop Your Untapped Reserves of Unstructured Data for Health, Safety and Environmental Improvements | 2009-07-01 | SAS Institute |
| To ensure the overall health of the enterprise and its safety and environmental conditions, companies prepare and file detailed incident (and near-incident) reports. Monitoring these events and performing timely analysis leads to effective remediation efforts. Many incident management systems are cumbersome and unavailable at the job site, causing some events to go undocumented. In addition, event details are often not reviewed or captured, which if done could help reduce future occurrences. All of these conditions impede the value and quality of information entered into the system, resulting in additional challenges to maintaining a safe workplace. Proven technology provided by SAS can help one take prompt action by easing the burden of capturing incident data, improving the quality of data, and speeding analysis and management notification.
