whitepaper Mining@home: Public Resource Computing for Distributed Data Mining2008-05-09 University of Calabria
Several kinds of scientific and commercial applications require the execution of a large number of independent tasks. One highly successful and low cost mechanism for acquiring the necessary compute power for these applications is the "Public-resource computing", or "Desktop Grid" paradigm, which exploits the computational power of private computers. So far, this paradigm has not been applied to data mining applications for two main reasons. This paper focuses on one of the main data mining problem: the extraction of closed frequent itemsets from transactional databases. They show that is possible to decompose this problem into independent tasks, which however need to share a large volume of data.

whitepaper Data Acquisition From Cell Phone Using Logical Approach2007-12-01 World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology
Cell phone forensics to acquire and analyze data in the cellular phone is nowadays being used in a national investigation organization and a private company. In order to collect cellular phone flash memory data, they have two methods. Firstly, it is a logical method which acquires files and directories from the file system of the cell phone flash memory. Secondly, they can get all data from bit-by-bit copy of entire physical memory using a low level access method. This paper describes a forensic tool to acquire cell phone flash memory data using a logical level approach. By the tool, they can get EFS file system and peek memory data with an arbitrary region from Korea CDMA cell phone.

whitepaper A Strategic Approach to Protecting SCADA and Process Control Systems2007-07-01 IBM
Process Control Systems (PCS) refer to the overall set of systems that remotely monitor and measure remote sensors from a centralized location. These sensors also typically possess some type of automated response capability when certain criteria are met. A subset of PCS systems that manage systems over very large geographic areas are typically referred to as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems or SCADA systems. SCADA systems make up the critical infrastructure associated with electric utilities, water and sewage treatment plants, and large-scale transportation systems like interstate rail. This paper provides an overview of the security weaknesses present in SCADA and other Process Control Systems, the potential impact of those weaknesses and recommended steps for assessing and securing SCADA systems.
whitepaper The Lixto Systems Applications in Business Intelligence and Semantic Web2007-03-16 Vienna University of Technology
This paper shows how technologies for Web data extraction, syndication and integration allow for new applications and services in the Business Intelligence and the Semantic Web domain. First, they demonstrate how knowledge about market developments and competitor activities on the market can be extracted dynamically and automatically from semi-structured information sources on the Web. Then, they show how the data can be integrated in Business Intelligence Systems and how data can be classified, re-assigned and transformed with the aid of Semantic Web ontological domain knowledge. Existing Semantic Web and Business Intelligence applications and scenarios using their technology illustrate the whole process.

whitepaper Multi-Spectral Data Acquisition and Processing Techniques for Damage Detection on Building Surfaces2006-07-06 University of Hannover
This paper describes the development and investigation of a multi-spectral laser scanner for non destructive diagnosis of damages on building surfaces. The application of four semiconductor lasers as defined active light source, especially in infrared wavelengths, allows the detection of damages like moisture, salt blooming and biological covering. Different methods for the evaluation of multi-spectral data for the analysis of damaged facades will be given. Whereas for preliminary statements vegetation and moisture indexes are applicable, further analysis is based on unsupervised and supervised pixel-based classification as well as object-oriented classification methods. An example clearly demonstrates the successful application of the multi-spectral laser scanner for the measurement of the relative moisture distribution on masonry.

whitepaper Automated Data Acquistion & Wireless Additions for Student Sensor Labs2006-04-01 Minnesota State University, Mankato
Recent additions to laboratory capabilities being developed to introduce students to sensor technology are described in this paper. During the school year a test fixture was developed to monitor air pressure using equipment which included a deadweight tester, Emerson pressure meter, diaphragm-capacitance pressure sensor and capacitance meter. A laboratory experiment was created and the test fixture is being used in student labs. During this school year the data acquisition process was improved using LabVIEW, a DAQ card and signal conditioning amplifiers to collect data from the Emerson meter, the capacitance meter, and a temperature sensor. A LabVIEW program was written to decode the BK Precision capacitance meter data and to store the data in files for future processing.
whitepaper Data Transfer From Microsoft Access to SAS Made Easy2005-03-14 AstraZeneca
To transfer data from Microsoft Access database to SAS has never been easy. Unlike Oracle database, neither SAS PROC SQL pass-through facility nor SAS/ACCESS can directly view or retrieve data from Access database tables. Users have to undergo a very complicated process in order to import data from Access without the help of additional software. This paper proposes an easy way to extract data from Access without any other additional cost. It is quick and automatic.

whitepaper Fast Data-Acquisition System for the Beam-Energy-Spread-Monitor2004-11-16 HIGH ENERGY ACCELERATOR RESEARCH ORGANIZATION, KEK
A non-destructive beam-Energy-Spread Monitor (ESM) using multi-stripline electrodes has been developed in order to measure and control the energy spread of a single-bunch electron beam. In the KEK injector linac, the non-destructive ESM has been installed at an 180-degree arc section with a beam energy of 1.7-GeV. The data-acquisition system of ESM was developed for pulse-by-pulse measurement. This system works well and is used for a daily operation. This paper presents this DAQ system in detail.
whitepaper Data Acquisition and Analysis of an Exclusive Measuring Machine for Marine Engine's Cams2004-10-01 Kyungnam University
In this paper, data acquisition and analysis of a measuring machine for marine engine's cams are discussed. A rotary encoder and linear scale of the machine to measure angular and linear displacement, respectively, are interfaced to the PC via an encoder board with 2 channels. The design and measuring data are interpolated by cubic spline curves to compute the precision error which is defined by the maximum and minimum distances between two curves. The minimum zone fit of ISO is employed to evaluate the geometric deviation. The developed system takes only 5 minutes to measure and analyze the precision error while the CMM takes over 1 hours even with a skilled operator.

whitepaper Integrating Automatic Data Acquisition With Business Processes Experiences With SAP's Auto-ID Infrastructure2004-01-01 SAP
Smart item technologies, like RFID and sensor networks, are considered to be the next big step in business process automation. Through automatic and real-time data acquisition, these technologies can benefit a great variety of industries by improving the efficiency of their operations. SAP's Auto-ID infrastructure enables the integration of RFID and sensor technologies with existing business processes. This paper gives an overview of the existing infrastructure, discuss lessons learned from successful customer pilots, and point out some of the open research issues.
