Gaining Perspective on Performance: Best Practices for an Effective 360-Degree Feedback Program | 2009-10-01 | SumTotal Systems |
| When planned in advance and run strategically, a 360-degree feedback program can offer serious business value. Feedback from multiple raters provides useful data on your employees, their performance, and their development needs. But be forewarnedÂyou can't launch a 360-degree feedback program without thinking ahead. This white paper takes a look at six critical questions to consider before embarking on the path to greater perspective.

Customer Centricity, Master Data and the "360-Degree View" | 2009-08-12 | DataFlux |
| When reviewing the popular literature on customer data integration and master data management, a frequently recurring business driver is the ability to establish a "360-degree view of the customer." This concept has turned into the holy grail of comprehensive customer intelligence. This paper will provide a list of questions that should be considered and reviewed during any project designed to deliver a 360-degree view.

Wireless Clinical Trial of Data Capture Using a Personal Digital Assistant | 2009-06-01 | Catholic University of Korea |
| Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) have the potential to improve clinical trial data collection; however, most current PDA-based clinical data collection systems typically collect and store data in the offline mode, and then transfer the data to an operational database. The purpose of this study was to explore the usefulness of a wireless clinical data collection system for an irritable bowel syndrome trial compared with the traditional paper based data collection. Methods: The paper has developed a PDA-based data capture system for clinical trials, and tested it in a double-blind trial.

Incorporating Site-Level Knowledge to Extract Structured Data From Web Forums | 2009-04-24 | Microsoft |
| Web forums have become an important data resource for many web applications, but extracting structured data from unstructured web forum pages is still a challenging task due to both complex page layout designs and unrestricted user created posts. This paper, studies the problem of structured data extraction from various web forum sites. The target is to find a solution as general as possible to extract structured data, such as post title, post author, post time, and post content from any forum site. In contrast to most existing information extraction methods, which only lever-age the knowledge inside an individual page, the paper incorporates both page-level and site-level knowledge and employ Markov Logic Networks (MLNs) to effectively integrate all useful evidence by learning their importance automatically.

Visualizing Irish Banter | 2009-04-21 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| Discussion forums could benefit from an exploratory search capability. The large quantity of information on discussion forums can present an opportunity for helping a user through visualization. Self organizing maps have been successfully used as a basis for visualizing high-dimensional data. The Forum Map prototype, created as an entry into the 2008 SIOC data competition, uses a self organizing map to lay out the "Member-space" of a discussion forum. A self organizing map can be used to create an overview of the forum, and an innovative interface can connect this visualization to the content of forum postings through labels and user interaction. | |||

PermaDAQ: A Scientific Instrument for Precision Sensing and Data Recovery in Environmental Extremes | 2009-04-16 | Association for Computing Machinery |
| The PermaSense project has set the ambitious goal of gathering real-time environmental data for high-mountain permafrost in unattended operation over multiple years. This paper discusses the specialized sensing and data recovery architecture tailored to meet the precision, reliability and durability requirements of scientists utilizing the data for model validation. The paper presents a custom sensor interface board including specialized sensors and redundancy features for end-to-end data validation. Aspects of high-quality data acquisition, design for reliability by strict separation of operating phases and analysis of energy efficiency are discussed. The system integration using the Dozer protocol scheme achieves a best-in-class average power consumption of 148µA considerably exceeding the lifetime requirement.

Visual Display of Large Data Volumes | 2009-03-22 | |
| Many organizations have huge amounts of data, containing hundreds of millions of records. There are good solutions available for the purpose of collecting, organizing and consolidating data, but people still struggle with presenting the data in a useful way. When trying to make use of the data, details are often sacrificed for overview, or the big picture is missed when small sets of breakdowns are investigated. Panopticon can display the millions of records from one's data repositories with fantastic overview in combination with full details. Panopticon delivers value without doing data warehouse acquisition procedures (ETL - Extracting, Transforming, and Loading) from source systems.

Have It Your Way: Rearrange and Replay Your Output With ODS DOCUMENT | 2009-03-20 | SAS Institute |
| Is everything about the SAS output the way one wants, except for the final order of the report objects? Does one want the output organized by year or by city, instead of by SAS procedure, without using SAS macro programs? Does one like the order that SAS produces, but one just want to change the folder hierarchy? This paper illustrates how to capture the output and save it in an ODS document store. Then, one can create custom folders and a custom folder hierarchy using ODS DOCUMENT and PROC DOCUMENT to rearrange and replay the output.

Proc Format, a Speedy Alternative to Sort Sort Merge | 2009-02-27 | Wells Fargo |
| Many users of SAS System software, especially those working with large datasets, are often confronted with processing time challenges. How can one reduce the amount of CPU required to retrieve specific data? In this paper, an "Outside the box" approach using a matching method utilizing Proc Format replaces the CPU heavy Sort/Sort/Merge. It is ideal for situations when a key from one file is needed to extract data from another file. It is more apparently useful when at least one of the files is quite large. This method has been proven time and again to decrease CPU by 70%-80% and is effective on all platforms utilizing Base SAS.
