Overview
UK supermarket Waitrose wanted to reduce IT management issues by standardising its IT infrastructure on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows XP Embedded. Previously, the company's point of sale (POS) systems ran on bespoke technology that was expensive to maintain. In addition, the back-end infrastructure was based on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, which was no longer supported. After exploring other operating systems to replace this outdated infrastructure, Waitrose chose to implement Microsoft XP Embedded.
