Overview

"Real Time" means different things to different people. For the purposes of this paper, real time is the ability to complete a task within a predetermined length of time - every time that task is performed - regardless of external stimuli. This paper documents the excellent results of several proof-of-concept exercises conducted with database and financial applications using SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time. It also includes specific results of real-time tests comparing the PDL times of SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time with Red Hat and other Linux kernels. PDL numbers are good indicators of how deterministic an operating system is. The lower the PDL number, the better real-time performance can be expected from a system in the real world.
