Overview

One of Mobile Crossing's major customers in the Federal government market had a need for a portable, ruggedized GPS-enabled device with enhanced graphics, fast performance, and reliability. The customer wanted to begin pilot testing in five months and to have production units ready for the summer driving season. Mobile Crossing needed a robust operating system optimized for battery-powered, handheld devices. The company evaluated open source platforms but had concerns about finding kernel engineers in time. Instead, Mobile Crossing chose Microsoft Windows CE 5.0 for its powerful embedded OS development tools, rich native and managed application tools, and an abundant choice of skilled professional developers already trained on the Windows operating system.
