whitepaper GISP: A Transparent Superpage Support Framework for Linux2008-03-31 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
Though all of the current main-stream OSs have supported superpage to some extent, most of them need runtime information provided by applications, simulator or other tools. Transparent superpage support is a further step, while so far there are only very few primitive attempts for Linux. This paper proposes the design of GISP (Global Information based SuperPage support), a transparent superpage support framework in Linux kernel. GISP adopts the basic idea of the reservation-based policy, and uses LMO (Lightweight Memory Object) and POPMAP (POPulation MAP) to manage the page allocation for applications. GISP could provide the core functions of superpage support while keeping the memory continuity by dynamic pages recycling.
whitepaper Running Linux on the PlayStation 3: More Than a Toy2008-03-18 IBM
The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) runs Linux, but getting it to run well requires some tweaking. In this paper, first in a series, Peter Seebach introduces the features and benefits of PS3 Linux, and explains some of the issues that might benefit from a bit of tweaking. When Sony first announced that the PlayStation 3 would be able to run Linux natively, a great deal of excitement ensued. Early on, it was a bit of a challenge to get Linux natively installed. The supported installer ran a custom script that hand-mangled a Fedora Core 5 or 6 install DVD into a runnable system with a special PS3 kernel. People put in hours and hours of effort to get other systems, such as Ubuntu, working.
whitepaper Hosting Data Center Networking With Vyatta2008-03-10 Vyatta
This paper will show how Vyatta open-source software combined with off-the-shelf x86 hardware can be leveraged to perform most routing and firewall requirements in the hosting data center at a fraction of the cost of closed proprietary systems. While proprietary networking equipment vendors have created discrete hardware product categories and price points based on arbitrary performance segmentation, open networking systems are proving that a single system can be continually upgraded to perform the same tasks. Vyatta solutions can be deployed at multiple points in the hosting data center from the backbone to the customer cage resulting in better performance and significantly faster Return On Investment (ROI).

whitepaper LOB Application Compatibility: Using Microsoft IT's LOB Application Compatibility Testing Processes2008-03-01 Microsoft Tips
Application compatibility is a concern any time an organization deploys new software to an existing computer environment. Whether the organization is deploying a new operating system or a new Web browser, it must ensure that the applications that users need to perform their daily tasks continue to function properly. Microsoft IT shares this challenge by being responsible for deploying and maintaining more than 1,500 internal LOB applications in an environment of mixed and changing operating systems, productivity applications, Web browsers, and development tools. With such a large portfolio of applications and a rapidly changing environment, Microsoft IT must identify commonalities between the applications in the portfolio as a means of grouping applications for testing.
whitepaper Design of the Light Weight Linux O.S on the DOM Memory2008-03-01 Dong-eui University
Many people are studying the embedded system. The embedded system becomes a small size device. The DOM memory is using in the mobile device and small size devices. This paper designs the light-weighted Linux O.S that is running onto the DOM flash memory. The embedded system with the DOM must have a light-weigthed O.S due to the memory space restriction. This paper designs a light-weigthed Linux O.S for the DOM memory. The new designed LILO boot loader boots the new designed light-weigthed Linux O.S as a normal Linux O.S. This paper experiments to compare the designed new light-weigthed Linux O.S with a Linux PC.

whitepaper Extended Assortitivity and the Structure in the Open Source Development Community2008-02-08 Indiana University
Open source software development represents the work of hundreds of thousands (perhaps millions) of developers around the world and is a critical component of many widely-used software products. Much of this development is self-organizing, taking place outside the structures of specific organizations. This paper introduces 'Developmetrics,' the application of Bibliometrics techniques to similarly characterize the artifacts produced by open source development (software). Similar cross-over analysis has been done before in the study of other self-organizing networks, such as the Internet. They use a standard Bibliometrics visualization technique to guide the discussion and they introduce extensions to concepts of network assortativity, node afference and node efference to accommodate network meta-data.

whitepaper Notable Changes in Windows Vista SP12008-02-01 Microsoft
Microsoft continuously improves the Windows Vista Operating System by providing ongoing updates while working with software and hardware vendors to help them to deliver improved compatibility, reliability and performance. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is another vehicle that Microsoft will use to deliver operating system improvements to customers. Windows Vista SP1 is an update to Windows Vista that, along with improvements delivered to users via these other channels, addresses feedback from the customers. In addition to previously released updates, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability, performance, and compatibility issues, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards. SP1 also will continue to make it easier for IT administrators to deploy and manage Windows Vista.
whitepaper Hotfixes and Security Updates Included in Windows Vista Service Pack 12008-02-01 Microsoft
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 includes all previously released updates for Windows Vista. Many of these updates are available to the public on the Microsoft Download Center and Windows Update, while others are only available to specific customers or partners. It is standard practice to include all of these updates in a Service Pack and as such they are included in Windows Vista SP1.
whitepaper An Assessment of Leadership Performance With POWER6 Processors and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.12008-01-31 IBM
Compute-intensive performance is increasingly required for today's high-performance environments. The IBM System p 570 with POWER6 processors provides leadership performance and demonstrates excellent scalability moving from one node to four nodes in this environment while providing linear SMP (Symmetric Multiprocessing) scaling and growth for workloads similar to the metrics used here. This paper highlights the exceptional performance on IBM's POWER6 processor-based systems running with the latest Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.1 operating system, based on recently audited published SPEC CPU2006 and SPECjbb2005 results, including single-system LINPACK metrics on System p 570 4-core, 8-core and 16-core systems. With Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) support turned on, Linux is easily able to provide effective scheduling support of the 32 processor threads seen on the 16-core 570 system.
