whitepaper The Best Gaming Platform in the World Might Be in Your Office2006-12-09 01:00:18 Microsoft
Few years back the personal computer reigned supreme as the ultimate gaming machine. It was the most versatile, undeniably powerful, and widely accepted medium through which people played out the digital gaming fantasies. Nowadays almost three complete generations of gaming consoles have leapfrogged the living room game box past the computer. In most cases, developers code primarily for consoles and secondarily for the desktop (or portable) computer. Computer gaming is nowhere near extinct, but its software retail sales have certainly fallen. That's a fall that Microsoft and Windows Vista intend to arrest, and the primary arresting tool is Windows Vista's version of Microsoft DirectX 10.

whitepaper Get Those Vista Apps Out the Door2006-11-30 01:00:17 Jupitermedia
With the Release To Manufacturing (RTM) of Windows Vista, the pressure is on developers to get their applications, old or new, ready to go. Both situations present their own set of challenges and opportunities. Why should a person care about Windows Vista if he develops and delivers software? The most obvious answer is he will be missing out on a large chunk of business if he doesn't. A second and equally important answer is he won't be able to take advantage of all the new capabilities that Windows Vista brings to the table.
whitepaper Custom Controls in Avalon2006-11-30 01:00:17 Interscape Technologies
Writing a custom control in Avalon is easy, right? Wrong. A person might be thinking right now that easiness is the essence of Avalon. And, he is right. The problem is that as software evolves, the person tries to build more and more complex things, while maintaining about the same number of lines. To quote Nathan Myhrvold, "Software is a gas - it expands to fit its container".

whitepaper Managing Windows Vista Group Policy (Part 2)2006-12-06 01:00:24 TechGenix
Windows Vista includes some important changes from earlier Windows operating systems in regards to Group Policy (GP). This paper introduces the reader to how Multiple Local Group Policy Objects (MLGPO) can make any 'Stand-alone', or 'Kiosk', administrator happy. Typically MLGPOs will be used in non-Active Directory environments where the user have standalone or workgroup computers, and the great thing is that it now supports different policy configurations for "Administrators" and "Non-Administrators" ("Limited users") and even specific policy settings for individual users! If a given user is not a member of the "Administrators" group, then the user is automatically considered a "Non-administrator", which is actually not a security group in itself. The paper covers multiple local group policy objects.
whitepaper An Overview of Link Local Multicast Name Resolution2006-12-06 01:00:24 TechGenix
When a user on a corporate network needs to access some resource off of another computer, the user usually specifies the remote system's NetBIOS name when establishing the connection. This means that users can attach to a remote system by using its NetBIOS name and Windows will query the DNS server in order to determine the IP addresses associated with the host record matching the computer's name. In most cases, it is either impossible or impractical to add a DNS server to a home network or to an ad-hoc network. This makes name resolution impossible. Windows Vista in Longhorn Server will change this with the new technology called link local multicast name resolution.
