Sequential I/O Performance of GPFS on HS20 Blades and IBM System Storage DS4800 | 2006-12-01 | IBM |
| The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the sequential I/O capability of General Parallel File System (GPFS) for Linux on HS20 blades inside the IBM BladeCenter blade server with the System Storage DS4800 storage subsystem using a 4 Gbps Fibre Channel interconnect. The paper shows that the GPFS file system on HS20 Blades and the DS4800 storage subsystem using eight EXP710 expansion units is capable of about 1300 MB/sec file create, and about 1600 MB/sec file read, throughput using sequential I/O.

IBM and Novell: The SLES 10 Success Story | 2006-12-01 | IBM |
| Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 10 delivers new functionality, improved scalability and increased performance. To enhance IBM solutions on System x, System p, System z, and BladeCenter servers, SLES 10 includes over 180 features requested by IBM. SLES 10 features support new IBM hardware (devices and processors), cross platform functionality, and interoperability of IBM middleware and hardware. IBM implemented customer requirements, gained community acceptance and performed extensive testing of SLES 10 on IBM platforms. IBM's collaboration with Novell has continued to advance the SLES enterprise solution, with fast time to production, new technology and superior quality.

Transforming Business-Critical Infrastructure Through Migration to Itanium-Based Servers | 2006-12-01 | Intel |
| Itanium-based servers are changing the face of business-critical computing by delivering enterprise-class scalability and availability on a computing architecture that is more flexible and affordable than proprietary RISC and mainframe architectures. Large businesses around the world are migrating to Itanium-based systems, and finding that the move helps to free them from the limitations of proprietary architectures, while improving the economics of their data centers in fundamental ways. This paper helps the reader to assess the potential value of an Itanium-based migration in a particular environment.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop and AMD64 Processors | 2006-12-01 | Novell |
| One needs a cost-effective, easy-to-use, secure desktop - and one also needs choice. That's where Novell can help. The SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, combined with AMD64 solutions and multi-core technology, is the first enterprise Linux desktop to meet these needs. AMD and Novell have a proven track record of innovation that meets critical customer needs. SUSE Linux Enterprise engineers have been at the forefront of Linux development for more than 12 years, and the SUSE Linux Enterprise operating system has supported both 32- and 64-bit computing platforms from the very beginning. This made Novell a natural partner for AMD.

A Performance-Aware Speculation Control Technique Using Wrong Path Usefulness Prediction | 2006-12-01 | Microsoft |
| This paper proposes implementable Wrong-Path Usefulness Predictors (WPUPs) that can accurately predict whether or not wrong-path execution will be beneficial for performance. The WPUP is used in combination with a novel low-cost fetch gating scheme that does not require large specialized prediction structures to estimate if the processor is on the wrong path. If the WPUP predicts that wrong-path execution will be beneficial for performance, the fetch engine is not gated. The results show that this mechanism reduces the performance loss incurred by fetch gating mechanisms that assume wrong-path execution is useless, thereby both improving performance and reducing energy consumption. | |||

Performance of Dual Processor Server on HEP Code | 2006-12-01 | Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare |
| Evaluation of cpu architecture for dual processor Worker Node. The performances of dual processor WN are evaluated using some programs commonly used in HEP environment. Finally the performances are compared to the clock of the cpu to assess and to the Spec 2000 CpuInt (commonly called specint) taken from the spec.org site.

Wireless Universal Serial Bus (WUSB): Greater Convenience and Mobility to Devices | 2006-11-28 | University of California |
| The Universal Serial Bus (USB), with one billion units in the installed base, is the most successful interface in PC history. Projections are for 3.5 billion interfaces shipped by 2006. Benefiting from exceptionally strong industry support from all market segments, USB continues to evolve as new technologies and products come to market. It is already the de facto interconnect for PCs, and has proliferated into Consumer Electronics (CE) and mobile devices as well. Wireless USB will build on the success of wired USB, bringing USB technology into the wireless future. Usage will be targeted at PCs and PC peripherals, consumer electronics and mobile devices.

Taxonomies for News Aggregator Interfaces and User Patterns | 2006-11-23 | Microsoft |
| This paper defines terminology for discussing the design and usage patterns for news aggregator applications. The work rests on a thorough analysis of available news aggregators and contextual inquiries with 34 users. The work explains approaches to aggregator user interface design and how those interfaces are employed. The results motivate the design of aggregators addressing these patterns.

Learning With Hypergraphs: Clustering, Classification, and Embedding | 2006-11-19 | University of Waterloo |
| The authors usually endow the investigated objects with pairwise relationships, which can be illustrated as graphs. Naively squeezing the complex relationships into pairwise ones will inevitably lead to loss of information which can be expected valuable for the learning tasks however. Therefore it considers using hypergraphs in-stead to completely represent complex relationships among the objects of the interest, and thus the problem of learning with hypergraphs arises. The main contribution in this paper is to generalize the powerful methodology of spectral clustering which originally operates on undirected graphs to hypergraphs, and further develop algorithms for hypergraph embedding and transductive classification on the basis of the spectral hypergraph clustering approach.
