The Charlotte Observer Looks to Make Headlines With Intel Multi-Core Processors and Virtual Iron 2006-12-12 Intel

The Charlotte Observer, North Carolina's largest daily circulation newspaper, needed to reduce data center costs while improving the overall responsiveness of mission-critical applications. Legacy systems running on expensive, proprietary hardware were no longer meeting their needs in terms of cost and performance. The Charlotte Observer put both Intel and Virtual Iron to the test by conducting a series of system trials that produced dramatic performance gains. Industry-standard servers running Linux on Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors 5300 series with Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) and Virtual Iron virtualization and management software dramatically outperformed proprietary platforms in terms of price and performance. Application performance improved greatly in the test of Intel multi-core servers with Intel VT and Virtual Iron.

SDI went live on Oracle E-Business Suite in 2000.

The SAS Institute purchased an additional 17 Dell Precision 470 work-stations to boost its training capacities and support three new training facilities.

MGM MIRAGE, one of the world's leading and most respected hotel and gaming companies, sought to reduce the associated costs of purchasing and maintaining an increasing number of servers by consolidating over 125 Microsoft SQL Server 2000 databases while improving manageability and providing future expandability. MGM MIRAGE deployed two eight-processor Unisys ES7000 Aries Model 410 servers employing 1.3 GigaHertz (GHz) Intel Itanium 2 processors and running in a Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition and SQL Server 2000 - based environment. The company eliminated 30 servers - with more to come - resulting in decreased costs. The consolidated environment improved the time-to-deployment for new applications.

To meet this goal, HED brought some research and design tasks in house, forming the Silicon Operations (SiOps) group to oversee development of the Graphics Processor Unit (GPU) Manufacturing would remain outsourced, so the team needed visibility of the supply-chain management process and access to real-time data from existing Microsoft and contract manufacturers' systems. The SiOps group implemented Microsoft Dynamics AX and, with Microsoft partner Fullscope, developed Microsoft Dynamics AX for High Tech Industries.

South Plains College (SPC) serves fifteen counties in the High Plains region of West Texas with an average enrollment of more than 9,000 college-credit students and more than 5,000 continuing education students. The Information Technology team at South Plains College wanted to facilitate collaboration between staff, faculty and students with reliable and secure network functionality as well as easily accessible e-mail capabilities. South Plains College enlisted the help of Dell Professional Services to conduct an assessment to implement Microsoft Active Directory and Microsoft Exchange. Dell Professional Services also implemented the equipment and software throughout its four campuses.
