| Growing use of e-Learning applications by the Nanyang Technological University's 3,000 faculty and staff members, 25,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and fast-rising number of alumni was pushing the university's RISC architecture - based IT infrastructure to its limits. | Hiroshima University was on a tight budget but needed abundant computing resources to fulfill its vision of being a unique, world-class research university. The university created a grid with more than 500 high-performance PCs based on the Intel Pentium 4 Processor with HT Technology. Hiroshima University realized high-performance Fujitsu PCs based on the Intel Pentium 4 Processor with HT Technology could do double duty. The university deployed 720 high-end PCs that run Microsoft Windows and Red Hat Linux during the day, depending on the application, and are used for teaching. At night, 500 of the PCs run Linux and are used in a grid, offering high performance for demanding HPC applications.
