whitepaper JouleSort: A Balanced Energy-Efficiency Benchmark2007-06-14 Association for Computing Machinery
The energy efficiency of computer systems is an important concern in a variety of contexts. In data centers, reducing energy use improves operating cost, scalability, reliability, and other factors. For mobile devices, energy consumption directly affects functionality and usability. The paper proposes and motivates JouleSort, an external sort benchmark, for evaluating the energy efficiency of a wide range of computer systems from clusters to handhelds. The paper lists the criteria, challenges, and pitfalls from the experience in creating a fair energy-efficiency benchmark. Using a commercial sort, the paper demonstrates a JouleSort system that is over 3.5x as energy-efficient as last year's estimated winner. This system is quite different from those currently used in data centers.
whitepaper Part 3: Orchestrating Into End-to-End Processes2007-02-01 Oracle
This paper focuses on how to build agile and standard business processes that orchestrate those services into end-to-end business flows. A business process is a series of steps required to implement a business function. The business process may include system interactions and/or human interactions, within an enterprise or extending across corporate boundaries. Some enterprises merely document their business processes, for consistency or regulatory purposes. However, the past several years have seen an increase in the number of organizations that use IT systems to execute and monitor their business processes in an automated fashion. The paper believes that one of the key drivers behind this accelerating adoption of Business Process Management (BPM) is the emergence of broadly accepted standards such as WS-BPEL for implementing and executing business processes.

whitepaper Wireless Universal Serial Bus (WUSB): Greater Convenience and Mobility to Devices2006-11-28 University of California
The Universal Serial Bus (USB), with one billion units in the installed base, is the most successful interface in PC history. Projections are for 3.5 billion interfaces shipped by 2006. Benefiting from exceptionally strong industry support from all market segments, USB continues to evolve as new technologies and products come to market. It is already the de facto interconnect for PCs, and has proliferated into Consumer Electronics (CE) and mobile devices as well. Wireless USB will build on the success of wired USB, bringing USB technology into the wireless future. Usage will be targeted at PCs and PC peripherals, consumer electronics and mobile devices.

whitepaper Windows Vista Multilingual User Interface Step by Step Guide2006-12-06 01:00:24 Microsoft
Microsoft Windows Vista includes Multilingual User Interface (MUI) features and technologies designed to meet the needs of organizations and corporations operating in a global business environment. This paper provides hands-on instructions for building a custom multilingual installation of the operating system in a test lab environment. A person can use the steps provided in this paper to become familiar with new and updated Multilingual User Interface (MUI) features and technologies available in Windows Vista.
whitepaper Microsoft SQL Server I/O Basics Chapter 2: SQL Server 2004 SP4 and SQL Server 20052007-05-29 00:08:30 Microsoft
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 continues to innovate and extend I/O performance and reliability. With new innovations come new terms, designs, and algorithms. The administrator of a SQL Server 2005 installation will find that visibility into the SQL Server I/O subsystem has been significantly increased. A primary focus of the SQL Server 2005 I/O design was overall stability of performance and data integrity as these relate to the outside influences of the I/O subsystem/path. The new and extended features provide both more visibility and more capabilities. One can maintain a SQL Server 2005 installation with high confidence in the system. This paper introduces new terms, discusses maintenance and configuration issues, new and improved error messages, and I/O enhancements.
whitepaper Updating Fibre Channel Expansion Card BIOS With RDM 4.302006-05-11 IBM
This paper explains how to use IBM Remote Deployment Manager (RDM) 4.30 (or a later RDM version) to update the BIOS on Fibre Channel Expansion Cards in BladeCenter HS20 systems. There are other ways to flash Diagnostics firmware (e.g., with the BIOS diskette, with the UpdateXpress CD, etc.). But using RDM to do this from a remote console on many systems concurrently, without having to visit the systems, is a powerful and easy way to accomplish this task.

whitepaper Basic Driver Requirements for WPD Devices2006-11-08 01:00:18 Microsoft
The Windows Portable Device (WPD) infrastructure for the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems supersedes both Windows Media Device Manager (WMDM) and Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) by providing a flexible, robust way for a computer to communicate with music players, storage devices, mobile phones, and other types of connected devices. This paper provides a preview of the basic requirements that all WPD drivers must meet to be eligible to receive a digital signature under the Windows Logo Program.
whitepaper Digital Video Broadcast to Handheld Via Hybrid Satellite/Terrestrial Network2006-11-30 01:00:17 Alcatel
This paper proposes a smart solution to deliver an unlimited Mobile TV service offer over an unlimited coverage area to an unlimited number of users. It provides an overview of this innovative mobile broadcast solution, its air interface features and key performance figures, and shows how it can address Mobile TV market challenges.
whitepaper Tumble! Splat! Helping Users Access and Manipulate Occluded Content in 2D Drawings2006-05-02 05:42:32
Accessing and manipulating occluded content in layered 2D drawings can be difficult. This paper characterizes a design space of techniques that facilitate access to occluded content. In addition, the authors introduce two new tools, Tumbler and Splatter, which represent unexplored areas of the design space. Finally, the authors present results of a study that contrasts these two tools against the traditional scene index used in most drawing applications. Results show that Splatter is comparable to and can be better than the scene index. The findings allow us to understand the inherent design tradeoffs, and to identify areas for further improvement.
whitepaper A Comparative Study of Energy Minimization Methods for Markov Random Fields2006-05-02 05:32:50 Springer Science+Business Media
One of the most exciting advances in early vision has been the development of efficient energy minimization algorithms. Many early vision tasks require labeling each pixel with some quantity such as depth or texture. While many such problems can be elegantly expressed in the language of Markov Random Fields (MRF's), the resulting energy minimization problems were widely viewed as intractable. Recently, algorithms such as graph cuts and Loopy Belief Propagation (LBP) have proven to be very powerful. This paper describes a set of energy minimization benchmarks, which one use to compare the solution quality and running time of several common energy minimization algorithms.
