whitepaper Blink: 3D Display Multiplexing for Virtualized Applications2006-01-17 University of Copenhagen
For management and security reasons, Virtual Machines are increasingly being deployed on Desktop PC's, but because existing VMM technologies are mostly targeted at servers, graphical performance is a stumbling block to many modern applications such as games, simulation, and video-conferencing. Existing high-performance display systems sacrifice safety and provide applications with direct hardware access, but the aim of the work discussed in this paper is to build a display system with Virtual Machine quality safety and isolation, while retaining performance comparable to less safe "Direct" approaches. The researchers developed Blink, a Display System for Virtual Machines, the core component of which is a JIT-compiler for extended OpenGL programs which execute safely inside the address space of the display server.

whitepaper Anti-Spyware: Knowledge and Software for Securing the Home PC2006-01-09 East Carolina University
It only takes a moment and you do not know until it is too late, if even then. While you are checking your email or looking up a website, a silent predator is downloaded onto your computer to watch your every move. OnGuard Online, a multimedia Internet safety campaign run by the Federal Trade Commission, defines spyware as "software installed on your computer without your consent to monitor or control your computer use." As easily as that, your privacy is invaded, your PC is slowly grinding to a halt, and you are left wondering what happened and what you can do about it.

whitepaper Open MPI: A Flexible High Performance MPI2005-12-10 Indiana University
A large number of MPI implementations are currently available, each of which emphasize different aspects of high-performance computing or are intended to solve a specific research problem. The result is a myriad of incompatible MPI implementations, all of which require separate installation, and the combination of which present significant logistical challenges for end users. Building upon prior research, and influenced by experience gained from the code bases of the LAM/MPI, LA-MPI, FT-MPI, and PACX-MPI projects, Open MPI is an all-new, production-quality MPI-2 implementation that is fundamentally centered around component concepts. This paper presents a high-level overview the goals, design, and implementation of Open MPI, as well as performance results for it's point-to-point implementation.

whitepaper Bumrungrad Hospital Transforms Healthcare Delivery with Integrated Information System on Intel® Architecture2005-11-23 Intel
Hospitals are information-driven institutions, but for many, that information is still paper based, or stored in a variety of incompatible information systems. Not at Bumrungrad Hospital (BH) in Bangkok, Thailand. BH has modernized its IT infrastructure with an integrated, Intel® architecture-based information system that puts all information — patient records, appointment scheduling, diagnostic images, billing, pharmacy labels, you name it — online and in a single database. The hospital has also led the way in implementing filmless radiology.

whitepaper Thin Computing ROI: The Untold Story2005-11-01 IDG (International Data Group)
Thin computing is the complete spectrum of hardware, services, and software solutions that allow people using thin clients, PCs, wireless devices, and other systems to securely access the information and the applications they need. Enterprise thin clients, the desktop component of thin computing are one of the least understood hardware options available to today's IT managers, yet they are one of the most cost-effective and secure options. This paper analyzes the opportunity for enterprise thin clients, focusing specifically on how a thin computing model compares with traditional client/server architecture with PCs when it comes to ROI.

whitepaper Running a Traffic Model on a Linux Cluster: Using MATLAB's Distributed Computing Toolbox2005-10-27 MathWorks
Distributed computing has become an accepted technology to reduce the time needed to perform large computations. The MathWorks has anticipated this development by introducing the Distributed Computing Toolbox for MATLAB. This toolbox allows MATLAB users to run their applications on clusters of PC's, thus obtaining results quicker than on a single PC. This paper describes the application of the toolbox to the dynamic traffic assignment model MARPLE, which is written in MATLAB. This model optimizes the settings of the traffic signals in an area. For large road networks, the optimization time becomes problematic. Parallelizing the optimization algorithm using the Distributed Computing Toolbox and running it on SARA's large Linux cluster has shown to be an efficient way to reduce the computing time.

whitepaper TaskZones: A Task Manager for Multiple-Monitor Systems2005-10-23 Association for Computing Machinery
This paper presents TaskZones, an alternative to Rooms and virtual desktops for grouping windows for multiple-monitor users. Key benefits of TaskZones are that it allows a user to designate the windows of an arbitrary selection of monitors as a group, allows a user to have multiple groups visible simultaneously, and maintains positive properties of virtual desktops such as exploitation of spatial memory, quick keyboard-command switching and the ability to hide groups of potentially distracting windows quickly, which is of special interest to multiple-monitor users. Furthermore, TaskZones can be used on essentially any physical configuration of monitors. "Any configuration" includes single-monitors, which thus allows use of TaskZones while mobile and possibly limited to one screen.

whitepaper SAM: Semantics Aware Instant Messaging for the Networked Semantic Desktop2005-10-04 University of Koblenz-Landau
While Instant Messaging (IM) became a mature communication means in business organizations over the last years, IM systems did not follow this evolution comparably. Communicated content is often stored insufficiently and hard to recall, integration into other desktop applications impossible. This paper addresses these shortcomings and provides concepts for novel instant messaging. In contrast to prior work such as the Haystack system, which integrates IM data into a personal information management application, they enhance IM based on a ready to integrate ontological meta model that introduces semantics to instant messaging and its content to foster advanced management. In particular, they address networked exchange of semantic meta information to integrate IM into the Networked Semantic Desktop.
