Windows Vista February 2006 CTP (Build 5308/5342) Review, Part 4: Improved Applications | 2006-04-14 | Penton Media |
| The more time goes by, the more it seems that users are not going to be seeing many surprises in Windows Vista. Many of the applications listed in this paper are warmed over versions of applications users have seen before in Windows XP or even Mac OS X, and precious little is changing from beta to beta. The author wants to believe that that's OK. After all, the operating system needs to stabilize so it can be completed by the end of 2006. But so little is changing, even when compared to XP, the author is quite nervous that Windows Vista is going to be a huge disappointment.

Digital Content Protection LSI for PC-Based Digital TV Receivers | 2006-04-01 | Fujitsu |
| This paper describes a "Digital content protection LSI" that prevents the hacking of PC-based digital TV receivers. Given the wide public knowledge about PC architecture, crackers may gain unauthorized access to PC software. Consequently, many broadcasters and other content holders are concerned that digital broadcast content may be stolen. This situation has curtailed the development of PC-based digital TV receivers for some time. Therefore, the authors have designed a protection scheme whereby content is protected even in open architecture environments such as the PC environment. This protection has been implemented in the form of a digital content protection LSI. These LSIs will open the way for the continued development of PCbased digital TV receivers.

Infrastructure Optimization: Driving Down Costs of the Business Desktop | 2006-04-01 | Microsoft |
| Deployment and management costs of PCs and the infrastructure that supports them use up 30 to 45 percent of most organizations' IT budget. However, increasingly complex IT environments often incur increased costs and require service level compromises. This paper presents the results of surveys and analysis conducted during 2005 at 14 private enterprises. These organizations used best practices and management software technologies to optimize their organization's IT infrastructure and reduce PC management costs. Results of this study indicate a direct correlation between the number of best practices adopted, the management technologies used, and the positive impact on reducing PC-related labor costs.

Case Frame Compilation From the Web Using High-Performance Computing | 2006-03-23 | University of Tokyo |
| Case frames are important knowledge for a variety of NLP systems, especially when wide-coverage case frames are available. To acquire such large-scale case frames, it is necessary to automatically compile them from an enormous amount of corpus. This paper considers the web as a corpus. They first build a huge text corpus from the web, and then construct case frames from the corpus. It is infeasible to do these processes by one CPU, and thus they employ a high-performance computing environment composed of 350 CPUs. The acquired corpus consists of 470M sentences, and the case frames compiled from them have 90,000 verb entries.

New Network Improves Communications for Seattle's Deaf Community | 2006-03-01 | Cisco Systems |
| The Hearing, Speech and Deafness Center (HSDC), a nonprofit community organization, has been serving Seattle since 1937. Their existing network was unreliable and failure-prone, forcing clients to be rescheduled, which increased costs and lowered productivity. The outages and outmoded scheduling system delayed center's ability to serve clients, further raising costs and hampering service. Their network problems caused sales at center's store to decline, resulting in loss of revenue. Frustrated with the failure-prone network, HSDC deployed Cisco for their solution. The new Cisco switches were installed by the center's IT staff. At the same time, they deployed 40-50 new PCs running Windows XP, and updated the scheduling and billing systems.

For Elisa: F-Secure Network Control | 2006-02-10 | F-Secure |
| Elisa is a telco operator based in Finland. Off late, Elisa's technical support was heavily loaded with solving end-user problems that were a direct result of Internet threats. Unprotected PCs in Elisa's network were being infected by malicious traffic such as viruses, zero-day network threats, spam and Denial of Service zombies. Once infected, computers changed from receivers into the senders of malicious traffic (without the user's knowledge) or the user perceived a negative Internet experience in general. This resulted in unwanted costs and time intensive corrective efforts from Elisa. Elisa installed F-Secure Network Control to solve the problems. Approximately 80 percent of the Elisa network is now presently covered.
