Linux Desktop Hacks: View Word and PDF Files From Within Mutt | 2005-03-09 | O'Reilly Media |
| Mutt is an extremely powerful terminal-based email client that supports IMAP, POP, and much more. No graphical email client can come close to the configurability of Mutt. That's why a lot of hard-core Linux users still use Mutt in spite of the myriad GUI-based email clients. It is certainly possible to launch a GUI application such as OpenOffice.org or Acrobat Reader to view Word and PDF email attachments in Mutt. But Mutt users aren't always using a graphical desktop, so it's handy to be able to view these documents as text, right inside the message itself.

| Mozilla Firefox is a Free/Libre/Open Source (FLOSS) browser supported by the Mozilla Foundation. This browser was recently released and has met with considerable success. It has been downloaded more than 20 million times and has already taken considerable market share from its prime competitor-Microsoft's Internet Explorer. This paper chronicles how the efforts of 63000 volunteers led to a community successfully competing with a powerful corporation. The author identifies four factors as the key facilitators to Firefox' success-complacent competition, product superiority, presence of marketing leader and volunteer support. In this paper, the author will also discuss the marketing of one open source product by a volunteer community- a topic that has hitherto gone unexplored. | |||

| This paper presents the key industry issues concerning interoperability and open standards with a view to developing sustainable solutions beneficial to all stakeholders. The focal point in the discussions amongst the different stakeholders - EU, Member State governments and industry - is the definition of open standards as the implications of this definition affect government services and business practices across Europe. Open Standards should refer to a technical interoperability framework which is agreed upon by companies and governmental decision-makers in order to ensure greater overall interoperability. This paper outlines how the balance between standardisation and intellectual property is struck by respecting the principles of transparency and non-discrimination. | |||
