whitepaper Columbia University Students Gain Valuable Experience in Operating System Design Using VMware2005-08-02 03:00:01
Professor Jason Nieh, a faculty member in Computer Science at Columbia University, faced a special challenge as he prepared to teach a course on operating systems to 140 students. Professor Nieh wanted his students to explore all aspects of developing an operating system, including modifying, designing, implementing, and testing kernel code. Unfortunately, this was difficult to do in the school's shared computing facilities - it was too risky to allow students to manipulate existing operating systems and too costly to provide students with separate computers. whitepaper The Role of Open Source2005-08-23 03:00:03 Novell
Government organizations are increasingly interested in open source computing solutions. Proprietary vendors are exerting considerable pressure, through new and more onerous licensing policies, to lock into their systems and foot the bill for frequent upgrades. Moreover, today's popular proprietary computing platforms raise concerns about security, reliability and performance. Open source solutions effectively address the major budgetary and infrastructure considerations driving government IT strategies. Open source cuts costs by lowering licensing and maintenance fees and by enabling deployment on less expensive hardware platforms.
