SafeDrive: Safe and Recoverable Extensions Using Language-Based Techniques | 2006-11-08 | University of California |
| This paper presents SafeDrive, a system for detecting and recovering from type safety violations in software extensions. SafeDrive has low overhead and requires minimal changes to existing source code. To achieve this result, SafeDrive uses a novel type system that provides finegrained isolation for existing extensions written in C. In addition, SafeDrive tracks invariants using simple wrappers for the host system API and restores them when recovering from a violation. This paper describes the experience using SafeDrive for protection and recovery of a variety of Linux device drivers. In order to apply SafeDrive to these device drivers, it had to change less than 4% of the source code. SafeDrive recovered from all 44 crashes due to injected faults in a network card driver.

Practical Integrity Measurement and Remote Verification for Linux Platform | 2006-11-05 | IBM |
| There are various problems in Trusted Computing adaptation in Common Off The Shelf (COTS) operating environment, like Linux. Although a TPM security chip is beginning to spread widely, retrofitting a COTS component with Transitive Trust and a remote platform integrity verification still does not work well, especially the verification performed by a third party. In this paper, while arranging the problem of integrity measurement arisen with COTS components, IBM proposes the practical solution.

The Economics of Technology Sharing: Open Source and Beyond | 2006-11-05 | University of California |
| The open source process of production and innovation seems very unlike what most economists expect. Private firms usually pay their workers, direct and manage their efforts, and control the output and intellectual property thus created. In an open source project, however, a body of original material is made publicly available for others to use, under certain conditions. In many cases, anyone who makes use of the material must agree to make all enhancements to the original material available under these same conditions.

JEMS: The Open Source Platform for SOA | 2006-11-03 | Red Hat |
| The term "Service-Oriented Architecture" (SOA) has been described in various ways throughout the IT industry. Since 2001, however, widely acknowledged standards such as Java EE and web services have enabled a new level of interoperability and SOAs. While many vendors have announced SOA initiatives and platforms, most implementations are dependent upon expensive, closed source platforms. And while there are a range of open source projects focused on the "Piece parts" of SOA, nothing exists to ensure these parts interoperate within a cohesive whole. Red Hat directly addresses these issues with the JBoss Enterprise Middleware Suite (JEMS), the open source platform for SOA. The JBoss Professional Open Source model presents JEMS as an affordable, developer-friendly, and cohesive SOA foundation.

Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition Vs. Apache Derby: A Performance Comparison | 2006-11-01 | Oracle |
| In the tests described in this white paper, Berkeley DB Java Edition performance exceeds Derby performance by up to a factor of 10. Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition (JE) is an open source, embeddable, transactional storage engine written entirely in Java. The innovative architecture of JE delivers excellent performance under highly concurrent read-intensive and write-intensive workloads. JE's design provides Java programmers with a highly scalable transactional storage engine. This paper compares the performance of Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition to Apache's pure Java RDBMS, Derby.

Configuring Oracle RAC Over InfiniBand | 2006-11-01 | Cisco Systems |
| This paper is intended to provide the general instructions on how to do the following: install Oracle Cluster Ready Services (CRS) over InfiniBand; install Real Application Clusters (RAC) 10g R2 over InfiniBand; configure a cluster database on RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 3.0 or 4.0 over InfiniBand. This paper should be used as a supplement to configure Oracle RAC to work with InfiniBand.

A Winning Combination: HP ProLiant Servers and Red Hat Enterprise Linux | 2006-11-01 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| Red Hat Enterprise Linux is a leading platform for open source computing, and Red Hat has worked closely with HP since the initial delivery of Red Hat Enterprise Linux to ensure that customers can deploy fully certified solutions based on HP ProLiant servers. In addition to the stability, performance, and scalability for Linux that comes with every ProLiant server, HP provides ProLiant Essentials a portfolio of modular, flexible software tools that expand the capabilities of ProLiant servers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux. These server management tools enhance the build out of an Adaptive Enterprise by lowering overall lifecycle costs and reducing demands on IT resources.

Linux Integration With IBM i5/OS | 2006-11-01 | IBM |
| IBM is committed to supporting the Linux operating system on the iSeries platform. There is the capability of installing Linux onto iSeries partitions, Integrated XSeries Server (IXS), and Integrated XSeries Adapter (IXA) thus reducing the capital expenditure of purchasing extra hardware. IBM has further enhanced its support of Linux by developing several methods by which the actual data and applications running on both Linux and IBM i5/OS can be integrated. One example is iSeries Access for Linux product, which enables a Linux user to connect to an IBM i5/OS with a 5250 session or an Open DataBase Connectivity (ODBC) enabled applications. The ability to connect Linux and i5/OS applications draws together the main strengths of both operating systems.
