As predicted in the September/Q3 MessageLabs Intelligence report, spam is not going away. This increase is largely attributed to the huge rise in botnet activity over the past few weeks. There are two contributing factors compounding this issue... | |||

Create an Excel Report From Several Oracle Databases Using Apache Jakarta POI | 2006-11-08 01:00:18 | Oracle |
| Microsoft Excel spreadsheets are ubiquitous in today's business environment. Although Excel can read and display delimited files, the .xls proprietary format provides additional expressive features, including font formatting and multiple sheets per spreadsheet. Many tools - commercial as well as open source - provide a mechanism for producing reports that Excel can read. Depending on the structure and use of particular databases, there are additional reasons why one might produce this type of spreadsheet, but these reasons are dependent upon functional requirements and definitions of particular databases. This paper describes how to use the Apache Jakarta POI open source project to produce a spreadsheet from several different datasources. | |||

Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition Vs. Apache Derby: A Performance Comparison | 2006-12-14 01:00:24 | Oracle |
| In the tests described in this white paper, Berkeley DB Java Edition performance exceeds Derby performance by up to a factor of 10. Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition (JE) is an open source, embeddable, transactional storage engine written entirely in Java. The innovative architecture of JE delivers excellent performance under highly concurrent read-intensive and write-intensive workloads. JE's design provides Java programmers with a highly scalable transactional storage engine. This paper compares the performance of Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition to Apache's pure Java RDBMS, Derby. | |||

HP Open Source Middleware Stacks White Paper: Security of Open Source Middleware Stacks | 2007-01-03 02:10:39 | Hewlett-Packard |
| Deployed Linux-based HP Open Source Middleware Stacks (OSMS) is an individual system composed of various components, configurations, and services. OSMS are a viable alternative to proprietary computer systems. When deployed, each system faces unique vulnerabilities and threats. Therefore, security cannot be applied to every system in the same way. No single security solution applies to all systems. To achieve an acceptable level of protection, one must understand the system and its environment. Security is not static so a secure solution today may not be secure tomorrow. Therefore, security is a process rather than a single component, device, or practice. This paper provides an overview of the security environment for OSMS in the system, network, and components areas. | |||

Virtuozzo Reigns in Server Management and Delivers Unmatched Performance | 2006-07-17 | SWsoft |
| arvato mobile had been using an open source virtualization solution and was sufficiently satisfied until the number of servers grew and application availability became critical. The company needed to evaluate and control resource use inside their virtual environments. They also needed centralized control; with hundreds of servers it's really great to have a single solid solution like the Virtuozzo Management Console and not some home made collection of scripts. Other administrative capabilities such as the integrated backup utility, the migration of virtual servers in seconds and the real-time resource management capabilities became important tools for arvato mobile. Virtuozzo's ability to backup its virtualized servers across the entire server cluster and restore them on any node is just fantastic.

Kickstarting Google Web Toolkit on the Client Side | 2006-11-29 01:00:19 | Sun Microsystems |
| At the 2006 JavaOne event, a certain company by the name of Google (they're very big in the search market, apparently) caused quite a buzz with the shock announcement of a new open source API for developing Ajax-heavy web applications. GWT - Google Web Toolkit - is Google's attempt to tame Ajax, making it a viable option for small-team and/or cost-conscious web applications development. And with a name like Google behind it, perhaps it's no wonder that so many are casting a inquisitive eye over this strange new technology. | |||

Is Windows Surviving Because of Pirated Software? | 2006-06-16 | Articlass |
| A recent column on Zdnet discussed the reasons why people won't change from a retail operating system to a free one. The implication is that Linux can't even give away their software. This paper is not to defend Linux and counter the points that the article made. Instead, the intention here is to simply use that article as a starting point to discuss in depth an issue which, so far as the author ever saw, is missing entirely from the debate Windows versus Linux versus Mac. The author gives five essential points to explain what is so bad about Linux that it can't even succeed for free.
