whitepaper Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) Usage in Military Computing2006-02-24 01:01:25
Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) has been constantly growing in importance and expanding in many software architectures all over the world. This impressive growth has been supported by the numerous successes, the high-quality reputation of FOSS-based systems and significant cost savings. Moreover, many FOSS applications have achieved a level of maturity and of recognition that raises them to a position of superiority over their commercial equivalents. This paper will present an overview of FOSS usage in the civilian world and will highlight the specifics of the military business case for more FOSS usage in C2IS architectures and for a better understanding of the potentially disruptive aspects of this technology.
whitepaper Exploring the Structure of Complex Software Designs: An Empirical Study of Open Source and Proprietary Code2006-02-24 01:01:25 President and Fellows of Harvard College
This paper reports data from a study that seeks to characterize the differences in design structure between complex software products. In particular, the authors use Design Structure Matrices (DSMs) to map the dependencies between the elements of a design and define metrics that allow us to compare the structures of different designs. They first use these metrics to compare the architectures of two software products - the Linux operating system and the Mozilla web browser - that were developed via contrasting modes of organization: specifically, open source versus proprietary development then they track the evolution of Mozilla, paying particular attention to a purposeful "Re-design" effort that was undertaken with the intention of making the product more "Modular".
whitepaper Economics of Open Source: The Motives and Methods Behind the Free Software That Is Challenging Market Leaders2006-02-24 01:01:25
Open Source Software (OSS) is starting to be known as a viable alternative to traditional commercial software. OSS is being used in almost all fields. This paper aspires to explain the current surge of open source software through economic analysis and to provide insight to the recent success of the open source movement. While working toward these goals, this paper will answer the how's and why's of open source software through standard economic models.
whitepaper NFS Performance Tuning With HP Storageworks Enterprise File Services (EFS) Clustered File System White Paper2006-01-03 01:01:49
This paper applies to the HP StorageWorks Enterprise File Services (EFS) Clustered File System (CFS) on the SLES9 Linux operating system. NFS file system performance using the default settings can be quite low. This white paper describes how to tune NFS performance to an optimal level.
whitepaper About Closed-Door Free/Libre/Open Source (FLOSS) Projects: Lessons From the Mozilla Firefox Developer Recruitment Approach2006-02-24 01:01:25
In this paper, the notion of a "Closed-door open source project" is introduced. In such projects, the most important development tasks are controlled by a tight group. The author presents five new arguments for why groups may wish to organize this way. The first argument is that developers simply do not have the disposable time to evaluate potential members. The next two arguments are based on self-selection-by setting tough entry requirements the project can ensure that it gets high quality and highly persistent programmers. The fourth argument is that expanding a group destroys the fun. The fifth argument is that projects requiring diverse inputs require a closed door approach.
whitepaper Firefox Secrets2006-03-09 02:56:45
Firefox, an Open Source product that's available for free from the Mozilla Foundation, has really come into its own as a functional, standards-compliant Web browser. Conceived with a focus on usability, and offering a trim but functional user interface, Firefox was intended as a viable alternative to older Web browsers, such as Internet Explorer, and has succeeded in this goal. This paper explains how and why Firefox will make the Web surfing experience smoother and more productive and Firefox's various features and explores the rationale behind the browser's design.
whitepaper Internet Tablet 2005 Software Edition and the Maemo Development Platform: Introductory White Paper2005-08-02 03:00:01
Internet Tablet 2005 software edition - a new device platform from Nokia based on the Linux operating system - is designed to power a range of noncellular Internet tablet devices. These devices are primarily designed for use in the home with wireless local area network (WLAN) or at public hot spots. In addition, these devices will complement Nokia's existing and future range of mobile phones, as well as enterprise WLAN installations.
whitepaper Open Source Software Maintenance Process Framework2006-03-07 05:00:21
To identify the Open Source maintenance process two well known Open Source projects Apache HTTP server and Mozilla web browser were studied. The Open Source software maintenance process is formal even anyone can submit modifications or defect reports to Open Source software projects. It is assumed that the Open Source maintenance process is similar to the maintenance process defined by the ISO/IEC. In the case studies, four activities were found similar to the activities of the ISO/IEC Maintenance process. This paper presents the Open Source maintenance process framework. The framework is exemplified with the ISO/IEC Maintenance process framework.
whitepaper Defensive Programming for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (And What to Do if Something Goes Wrong)2005-11-03 01:00:03
Programming Language APIs and their libraries are often not designed with safety in mind. The API of the C language and the Unix API (which is defined using C) are especially weak in this respect. It is not necessarily the case that all programs developed using these programming languages and APIs are unsafe. This paper will describe possible problems, how to prevent them, and how to discover them.
whitepaper Modeling Recruitment and Role Migration Processes in OSSD Projects2006-03-07 04:59:18
Socio-technical processes have come to the forefront of recent analyses of the Open Source Software Development (OSSD) world. Though there many anecdotal accounts of these processes, such narratives lack the precision of more formal modeling techniques, which are needed if these processes are going to be systematically analyzed, simulated, or re-enacted. Interest in making these processes explicit is mounting, both from the commercial side of the industry, as well as among spectators who may become contributors to OSSD organization. Thus, the work discussed in this paper serves to close this gap by analyzing and modeling recruitment and role transition processes across three prominent OSSD communities whose software development processes were previously examined: Mozilla.org, the Apache community, and NetBeans.
