whitepaper On-Time and Scalable Intrusion Detection in Embedded Systems2006-02-22 University of Houston
Embedded systems are becoming ubiquitous and are increasingly interconnected or networked, making them more vulnerable to security attacks. A large class of these systems such as SCADA and PCS has real-time and safety constraints. Therefore, in addition to satisfying these requirements, achieving system security emerges as a critical challenge to ensure that users can trust these embedded systems to perform correct operations. One objective in a secure system is to identify attacks by detecting anomalous system behaviors. This paper describes the challenges in the design and implementation of such intrusion detection capability.

whitepaper Enabling Wi-Fi Connectivity for Embedded Systems0000-00-00 QuickLogic
Adding Wi-Fi or IEEE 802.11a/b/g functionality to embedded systems is gaining in popularity. Quite often however, Wi-Fi modules do not have the same native interface as the embedded processors used in these systems. This webcast will specifically look at how this problem can be solved for portable applications where engineers constantly struggle with very tight power requirements and limited board space.

whitepaper Design, Modeling and Characterization of Embedded Capacitors for Decoupling Applications2006-01-13 IBM
Surface Mount Discrete (SMD) decoupling capacitors fail to provide decoupling above 100MHz. This paper presents the use of embedded thin film capacitors to provide decoupling in the mid frequency range from 100MHz to 2GHz. On-chip capacitance provides decoupling above 2GHz. The effect of chip, package and board capacitors on the performance of digital systems is analyzed taking into account the parasitic effects of power/ground planes, vias and solder balls. A synthesis and selection methodology for embedded package capacitors is also presented. The performance of 2 different embedded package capacitor technologies from Dupont and the Packaging Research Center (PRC) will be investigated in this paper.

whitepaper Tips for Planning Your Embedded Linux Project2005-11-18 BEC Systems
This paper will help to ask the right questions and plan for a successful project. With so many options, it is critical to do a little planning up front. What does "Embedded" mean? In the context of this paper the authors are talking about Embedded Systems which generally means any computer embedded in a device that is not a desktop computer or a general purpose server. The issues discussed in this paper are - Is Linux the right OS for the device?; the BIG WIN with embedded Linux; overview of the components, approaches, and skills required; how much does it cost?; how to manage the risks; does a person need to maintain the system?; and thoughts on IP and licensing issues.

whitepaper Embedded Linux in a Wireless Router (EMLI)2005-10-26 Loyola University
Embedded system is a combination of hardware and software behaving as a small computer system to do a specialized job. EMbedding LInux (EMLI) simply means that people can use the Linux features to serve a particular purpose. EMLI is an attempt to embed a small set of Linux commands into a wireless router. In this paper the authors use a Linksys wrt54g router to embed and execute a subset of Linux commands. They take advantage of the ping bug present in the router to insert the command set into it. This paper also discusses the possibility of using this embedding to detect intrusion and prevent them using snort.

whitepaper An HW/SW Co-Design Environment Based on UML and SystemC2005-07-15 Universita degli Studi di Milano
This paper outlines some fundamental concepts for the development of a system design framework based on standard notations and common CASE tools. The paper describes an environment for HW/SW co-design of embedded systems based on the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and SystemC. Taking advantage from the capabilities provided by widely used UML tools, this environment provides code generation for co-design of hardware and software.

whitepaper Controlling EWF by Using the EWF APIs2005-05-01 Microsoft
Windows XP Embedded includes Enhanced Write Filter (EWF), which provides a means for protecting a volume from disk writes. This paper provides several examples that demonstrate how to create applications by using the set of EWF application programming interfaces (APIs) through Visual Studio .NET 2003. The Write Filter component in Microsoft Windows NT Embedded provides basic support to protect a hard disk from read and write access.

whitepaper Configuring a Windows XP Embedded Thin Client2005-04-01 Microsoft
This white paper provides an overview of the initial steps needed to customize a Windows XP Embedded run-time image for thin clients. It gives an overview of the hardware on the development system that is used in the run-time image's Hardware Abstraction Layer. It explains how to run Target Analyzer to create a Devices.pmq file that includes all the device drivers required to operate the target hardware. It describes how to use Component Designer to create a component definition (.sld) file that lists the hardware components for the run-time image. The white paper also explains how to add missing components to the .sld file, and how to customize the configuration by adding additional components.

whitepaper Kiosk/ATM Operating System Platforms2005-04-01 Microsoft
Kiosks are increasingly used by a wide range of retail, hospitality, and financial institutions to provide more convenient access to information, accelerate self-service transactions, and reduce the cost of customer service delivery. This paper explains why Windows XP Embedded is the preferred Windows Embedded operating system platform for building a wide range of kiosks, including Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) that leverage low-cost PC architecture hardware while providing the ability to deliver the latest Windows XP services.

whitepaper Dual-Booting Tips for Windows XP Embedded2005-03-01 Microsoft
Many first-time Windows XP Embedded developers choose their own development system as a Windows XP Embedded target platform. Known as dual-booting, this allows the developer to build the Windows XP Embedded operating system in Windows XP Professional, download the operating system to a separate partition or hard drive, and then reboot the machine into Windows XP Embedded. Dual-booting saves money, because it is no longer necessary to buy a separate computer as a target. Dual-booting is one of the most popular target methods when getting familiar with Windows XP Embedded. This paper discusses some of the tricks to use to solve dual-boot configuration issues.
