SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop and AMD64 Processors | 2006-12-01 | Novell |
| One needs a cost-effective, easy-to-use, secure desktop - and one also needs choice. That's where Novell can help. The SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, combined with AMD64 solutions and multi-core technology, is the first enterprise Linux desktop to meet these needs. AMD and Novell have a proven track record of innovation that meets critical customer needs. SUSE Linux Enterprise engineers have been at the forefront of Linux development for more than 12 years, and the SUSE Linux Enterprise operating system has supported both 32- and 64-bit computing platforms from the very beginning. This made Novell a natural partner for AMD.

A Performance-Aware Speculation Control Technique Using Wrong Path Usefulness Prediction | 2006-12-01 | Microsoft |
| This paper proposes implementable Wrong-Path Usefulness Predictors (WPUPs) that can accurately predict whether or not wrong-path execution will be beneficial for performance. The WPUP is used in combination with a novel low-cost fetch gating scheme that does not require large specialized prediction structures to estimate if the processor is on the wrong path. If the WPUP predicts that wrong-path execution will be beneficial for performance, the fetch engine is not gated. The results show that this mechanism reduces the performance loss incurred by fetch gating mechanisms that assume wrong-path execution is useless, thereby both improving performance and reducing energy consumption. | |||

AMD64 Technology: A Superior Foundation for Storage System Designs | 2006-11-03 | Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) |
| Storage has become a fundamental part of the enterprise datacenter. With the increased pressure to effectively manage stored information and the growing diversity of customers requiring storage systems, OEMs are tasked with providing differentiated solutions. And there are technology-based market shifts in play that also impact how OEMs must innovate to meet this changing market. This paper will examine the new and diverging factors driving storage system development. It will also examine how AMD64 technology, the fastest growing computing platform for the enterprise data center, can lend processor-level innovations that help storage vendors deliver optimum systems for their customers.

AMD64 Technology: Providing Storage Customers With a Competitive Advantage | 2006-11-03 | Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) |
| The storage market is breaking away from the legacy model (application servers with islands of difficult-to-manage storage) to on-demand, networked storage where systems are more fault tolerant and accessible. Storage customers are measuring the performance of I/O and data throughput, in addition to reliability, manageability, and scalability. As a result of this evolution, storage manufacturers are finding it can benefit their system design to carefully consider the microprocessor, which has not been historically viewed as a differentiating or value-added component. With systems based on AMD64 technology, storage customers can take advantage of one of the fastest growing business computing platforms and incorporate leading performance, cost savings and ease of management into their storage strategy.

HW-SW Framework for Distributed Parallel Computing on Programmable Chips | 2006-11-02 | Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona |
| This paper addresses a new hardware/software Multi Processor System-on-a-Chip (MPSoC) co-design methodology to map PVM/MPI parallel software framework to a developed multiprocessor architecture for distributed parallel computing on a chip. This methodology is composed of two concurrent phases. The first one is the software development of the embedded parallel framework for on-chip platforms. Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) and Message Passing Interface (MPI) are two traditional software frameworks for distributed parallel computing, so we need to translate one of them towards the on-chip environment. The goal of the second phase is to develop distributed parallel on-chip hardware architecture, based on Multiprocessor System-On-a-Chip (MPSoC) that includes a Network On-a-Chip (NoC) strategy, together with the corresponding distributed memory subsystem.

Performance Brief for Lotus Domino Web Access on the HP ProLiant DL360 G5 Server With Lotus Domino 7.0.1 | 2006-11-01 | Hewlett-Packard (HP) |
| A workload designed to replicate a typical Domino Web Access user environment was tested against an HP ProLiant DL360 G5 server with two Dual-Core Intel Xeon 5160 processors (3.00 GHz, 1333 MHz Front Side Bus) to determine the maximum user load this server can support. The test was conducted against a Domino 7.0.1 server, and measured the performance of 19,500 users participating in Domino Web Access related activities simultaneously connected to three partitions on a single HP ProLiant DL360 G5 server platform.

Code Transformation Strategies for Extensible Embedded Processors | 2006-10-25 | Association for Computing Machinery |
| Embedded application requirements, including high performance, low power consumption and fast time to market, are uncommon in the broader domain of general purpose applications. In order to satisfy these demands, chip manufacturers often provide developers with the possibility to define application-specific Instruction Set Extensions (ISEs). Many techniques have been proposed that automatically identify the most beneficial ISEs from source code, so that compilers can identify the 'Best' instruction set for the underlying machine. This paper shows why compilers should sometimes make different decisions when targeting customized processors, and they show how traditional ISE identification techniques can improve significantly if the code is properly transformed in order to expose more beneficial extensions.

How to Enable Processor Power Management in Windows Server 2003 | 2006-10-24 | Microsoft |
| Server power consumption and its associated operating costs are becoming increasingly important in the data center. Processor power management technologies that were once limited to mobile processor designs are now being offered on server processors from all leading processor vendors. Microsoft Windows Server 2003 supports these processor power-saving technologies, which can be enabled with a simple change to the Microsoft Windows active power policy. This white paper provides details on how to enable this support on capable platforms, as well as tips for verifying that processor power management is working.
